“But perhaps that’s the point: the trials and tribulations of life weigh heavily upon us, but we find people to help lighten the load.”

Somewhere Beyond the Sea (Cerulean Chronicles #2) by TJ Klune

December 30, 2024 by cheerbrarian 6 Comments

THIS IS IT. I’M DOING IT. MY 52ND BOOK REVIEW OF 2024 BABYYYYYYYYY. And what a delightful tome to end it on!  I have been eager to read the 2nd in this series since it came out, but of course the holds list at the library is five-ever deep. And then, I walk in two weeks ago and TAH DAH it’s on the hot picks shelf, where they put out 1 or 2 copies of new books that you can check out, for one less […]

“Love was the destroyer. It made mourners, widows, left misery in its wake. Grief and love were one and the same. Grief was the shadow love left when it was gone.”

Rules of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo

CBR Bingo – Take Flight This is the final book both in the King of Scars duology, and in Bardugo’s entire Grishaverse, and it wraps everything up very satisfyingly. We were reunited with some favorite characters from across her universe, good triumphed over evil, and love melted even the most grief-stricken and cold hearts. (Sidenote: I’ve chosen this book for the”take flight” bingo category because aerial warfare has a huge role in this world, not to mention two characters who develop the skill of flight […]

“If we were all a little more selfish with our own lives instead of being in such a hurry to defend everything to the death the universe would be a much less scary place”

Saga (Volume 8) by Brian K Vaughan

February 21, 2023 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

With a backdrop that is distinctly western, this volume starts with a wooden sign that says, “Welcome to Abortion Town!” And how you feel about that as an opening to a graphic novel (offended? jarred? intrigued) is a pretty good barometer for if you would like this series. I find it overall to be a jarring delight, but it’s not for everybody (she says, knowing she recommended it at work, and now someone she works with is reading it and she immediately had an OH […]

“Because I know that no matter what, I’m wonderful.”

A Psalm for the Wild-Built (Monk & Robot #1) by Becky Chambers

December 7, 2022 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

As the year is winding down I find myself in the position of staring aspirationally at my reading goal. I’m not ready to throw in the towel yet, so I am on the hunt for small books that will be a good way to spend my time and get me one step closer to that end. Clocking in at a mere 147 pages this little novella will charm, amaze, and move you. The only reason I wasn’t full-on sobbing at the end (cathartically, not with […]

“When my life was new, I understood in my bones how little it mattered what anybody else was doing, or what they thought about what I was doing. I believed my bones then.”

Somebody's Daughter by Ashley C. Ford

November 14, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Raw Cannonball Read Bingo: Elephant I’ve been toying with writing my own book for a few years now, and am finally starting to get serious about the endeavor, or at least get serious about saying I’m getting serious, which is practically the same thing, right? I cashed in a work award (thanks Snappy!) for a free six-month Skillshare membership and came upon a course by Ashley C. Ford on writing titled “Creative Personal Writing: Write the Real You.” I loved her style […]

Come for the Recipes, but maybe not the Puns

Husbands That Cook by Ryan Alvarez, Adam Merrin

May 7, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Husbands That Cook caught my attention first with the title, and then with the notice that it was a vegetarian cookbook. The husbands of the title are Ryan and Matt (apparently they have a blog but that’s outside my pop culture knowledge) who pre-pandemic seem to have been big into trying out all the various local (LA-ish) restaurants; a lot of the recipes are international, but not always the same old, which is nice. Yes, there’s the expected shakshuka, bibimbap, samosas, ramen, and a tagine, […]
