Nancy D goes 21st century

he Secret of the Old Clock: A Nancy Drew Detective Story by Marci Kay Monson and Ryan Wheatcroft

October 8, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Who used to read the Nancy Drew books? There are the originals, reissues, and adaptations for all ages. The first book was about an old clock mystery. I read it back in the day, but was more of a Hardy Boy fan and never read too many Nancy’s adventures. Yet, when I had the opportunity to get an online copy of  The Secret of the Old Clock: A Nancy Drew Detective Story by Marci Kay Monson and illustrations by Ryan Wheatcroft (due later April 2026), […]

Monster: The Graphic Novel by Walter Dean Myers and Guy A. Sims

September 28, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The flow of this graphic novel adaptation of the Walter Dean Myers Monster was a little hard at times to follow with the bouncing between timelines. We see “before events” as well as “during events” and “current events.” The ending suggests an after the current events scene or two. The themes of truth, trust and lies are tossed on their heads in Guy A. Sims adaptation. Monster: The Graphic Novel includes a realistic take on the justice system. However, due to the type of people […]

Unsolved Case Files: Escape at 10,000 Feet: D.B. Cooper and the Missing Money by Tom Sullivan

February 2, 2021 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I think that Unsolved Case Files: Escape at 10,000 Feet: D.B. Cooper and the Missing Money by Tom Sullivan will be on the top ten best list of 2021 Reads for me. There is a lot about this book that people do not know and yet, it fascinated a nation for years. This book will grab readers who like nonfiction, mystery, and true crime. In “my day” it would be a “boy book” but currently anyone can find something about it. I will point out […]

Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty by G. Neri

January 6, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty is a graphic novel by G. Neri that is based on actual events. This is the story of how 11-year-old Roger (a fictional character) tries to make sense of the death of Robert “Yummy” Sandifer. Also 11-years-old. Also living in Chicago. A kid who was as sweet as the candy that gave him his nickname. A kid who would burn up a car if the owner disrespected him. A kid who called his grandmother home. A kid […]
