Holmes: better left alone

October 27, 2018 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

The first pick for my library book club came in with a whimper. Overall, we (self included) didn’t really like this book. This was an interesting endeavor because King takes Sherlock’s Holmes out of retirement, and back into the fray, with the addition of the plucky Mary Russell, a whip smart teenager who befriends Holmes and keeps him on his toes. In addition to Holmes there is the familiar cast of characters: Mrs. Hudson, Watson, and Mycroft. Watson is more secondary as Russell serves to […]

I like less psychobabble with my mysteries

April 2, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 5 Comments

I really, really wanted to like this, but I really really did not. I’ve read some of King’s Mary Russell series which I’ve massively enjoyed. Unfortunately the first installment of the Kate Martinelli series was not for me. I’m halfway tempted to try the second in the series to see if I like it better. It appears that this was King’s debut, so maybe she was just working some stuff out in her first novel? Detective Kate Martinelli was just promoted to homicide and keeps […]

Move over Sherlock Holmes

December 30, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

3.5 stars. This was a good, solid mystery book. In a way, it’s Sherlock Holmes fanfiction reclaiming the original series for women (in a similar way that Elementary the tv series functions). Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories are classics for a reason, but the casual sexism is undeniable and for a modern reader like myself, it can be hard to swallow, “the woman” Irene Adler or no. The Beekeeper’s apprentice examines what it would be like if an older Sherlock had a female protege. Holmes meets […]

Cute but mysterious lady cop with a hidden past. Sure I’ll bite.

Half Cannonball!  Woooo!  Do you think I can cram another 26 books between now and the end of the year?  Probably not, but I am aim to keep going. I am not sure what possessed me to pick up this book.  Something about it seemed familiar.  I had déjà vu the entire I was reading it right until the end.  I had grabbed it from a display at the library as I was heading to the checkout. It’s a quick little murder mystery.  Not usually the […]

Book exchange goodies from MsWas!

December 18, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

Received a happy surprise when I got home from work today. I read the first book in this series this year for CBR7 and loved it. I’m so excited I have the next three all ready to go for CBR8. Thank you so much, MsWas!!! You’re the best 🙂 (P.S. I am obsessed with these covers. I wish they had continued making the series with them instead of the ones they do now. They’re so purty.)
