“As far from God, as heaven is wide”

The Language of Bees (2009) by Laurie R. King

August 13, 2022 by drmllz Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo square: Minds: Sherlock Holmes and his wife Mary Russell are solving the mystery of Sherlock’s missing daughter-in-law and granddaughter; minds are vulnerable to influence by the predatory; Damian Adler is a surrealist artist who rejects reason in his paintings. I was given The Beekeeper’s Apprentice (1994), the first in Laurie R. King’s ‘Russell and Holmes’ (yes, that Holmes) series for my birthday last year, and read it in the weeks following my surgery in May. It was a hot and arid few weeks, […]

A trip to the Moor is a trip to Dullsville, unfortunately.

The Moor (Mary Russell, #4) by Laurie R. King

December 19, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Three stars is a combo of me not being in the mood and forcing it, and the book being not as good as I wanted it to be. (six months later as I go to actually write this review) No, I’m not even going to make excuses for this. It was very dull! The setting was dull. The mystery was dull. The interactions between Holmes and Mary were dull. Holmes was dull! And the resolution of the mystery did nothing for me. Returning to the […]

Holmes and Watson and… Mary Russell?

The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King

October 8, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

This is the first installment in Laurie R. King’s series retelling of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. The series is set after Holmes’ supposed retirement from detective work, and begins when Mary Russell, a teenage orphan who lives on the farm next to Holmes’ retirement pad, literally runs into Holmes on the moor.  Over time, Mary becomes Holmes’ defacto apprentice, and this first novel is really concerned with laying the groundwork for the series (Wikipedia tells me there are 17 books after this first installment, which […]

I do, however, have some self-esteem.

The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R King

August 26, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This novel series poses a young Holmes apprentice showing up in the detective’s early old age and becoming a beloved niece kind of character. The book quickly dispels any sense of attraction or impropriety by establishing a chaste and avuncular relationship. But what it does establish is Mary Russell’s capacity as the same kind of thinker and detective as Holmes. She’s sometimes criticized as a “Mary Sue”, that old misogynistic canard, because she’s so good. But really she’s good at three things, really: detection, chess, […]

Somehow this series still works.

This one started out really strong for me, and then petered out near the end, for a couple of reasons, which I will be marking in spoiler tags. Mary and Holmes continue to be a great pair, and I find their cerebral marriage a compelling one, though I am beginning to get a bit annoyed with King for discounting Watson so much. Here, we meet an old friend from the first book, the archaeologist Dorothy Ruskin, who shows up in Sussex for a visit, and […]

Finally tackling a CBR book exchange book. #CBRBingo

October 29, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

Really not sure why I waited three years in between reading books one and two. Especially since I’ve been on a Sherlock Holmes kick since January 2017 (still going strong!). And especially since MsWas was kind enough to send me books two, three, and four in the CBR Book Exchange that year. They’ve just been sitting here waiting for me! I think I kind of forgot why I liked the first book so much after I read it, and it wasn’t the mystery, or even the appearance […]
