Not great for class, but good to read

Messy Roots by Laura Gao

December 31, 2024 by Bibliophile Leave a Comment

“Every time I struggled to fit into the world around me, I thought if I flew far away enough, like Chang’e, the perfect home would magically appear. But when your roots are tangled up across so many different places, that perfect world may not exist.” My school generally tries to have us read books in English class that are more accessible to people and that will make people more likely to actually read and enjoy, hence them having us read Messy Roots as part of […]

White Rabbit Candies get an automatic 4 stars from me

Messy Roots by Laura Gao

Initially this book intrigued me because of the art style. So I fall again to the temptation to judge a book by its cover. This, however, is more fair this time around, as in graphic novels the art is one of the most important aspects of the writing. The art style moves forward the story and every character in it, and good art can make even the worst plot compelling. This book is yet another memoir, in a long list of recent memoirs I have […]

The plus side of sitting around for a week of vacation is that I get a lot of comics reading done! I was lucky enough to receive a lot of interesting books for the holiday. Below are some pocket reviews: Why Is Everybody Yelling? This is a graphic memoir about Marisabina Russo’s childhood growing up in Queens in the late 1950s and 1960s. Her Jewish mother had converted to Catholicism to marry her father before their divorce, and then moved to NYC to raise her […]

Gao’s debut is messy, but yet, it is wonderfully so!

Messy Roots: A Graphic Memoir of a Wuhanese American by Laura Gao

October 25, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Messy Roots: A Graphic Memoir of a Wuhanese American is a messy book. But it is all wrapped up in a neatly created graphic novel. The world of Laura Gao has been seen in other stories (this is a coming-of-age story with features we know: immigration, expectations of family, coming out), but hers is completely unique to her and therefore, to the reader. At first, the book seems like it might be about the pandemic, and what happens to her and her family as Chinese […]
