A Breath of Fresh, Fierce, Queer Air

Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera

January 27, 2021 by Polyesque 4 Comments

From the first time I heard author Gabby Rivera’s laugh and her description of her book on Brene Brown’s podcast “Unlocking Us”, I knew I had to read Rivera’s debut novel “Juliet Takes a Breath”. After a mix-up at the local bookshop where I ordered it from was cleared up (they handed me the graphic novel and not the hardcover I ordered – and I have nothing against graphic novels, I just wanted to read all of her words first), I went home and devoured […]

Not all rainbows in these celebrity memoirs

We're Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union

Handbook for an Unpredictable Life: How I Survived Sister Renata and My Crazy Mother, and Still Came Out Smiling (with Great Hair) by Rosie Perez

November 23, 2020 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I read We’re Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union for my last in-person Mocha Girls Read meeting in March. This memoir is a collection of moments that are mostly linear with some flashbacks. Unlike Becoming, the chapters are not as detailed about her early childhood. The book is all about keeping it real and reflecting on her past with levity. We learn about her family and how she at a young age she looked after herself. With no supervision, Gabrielle got up to some […]

Jasmine’s Leading Lady Plan

You Had Me at Hola by Alexis Daria

July 28, 2020 by Emmalita 2 Comments

I’ve been hearing buzz about Alexis Daria’s You Had Me at Hola for weeks. I was very happy to see it on NetGalley and to receive a copy in exchange for an honest review. It’s wonderful, I finished it in just a few hours. Actress Jasmine Lin Rodriguez is back in her hometown, NYC, to take the lead in a remake of an old telenovela, Carmen in Charge. She’s excited about the new roll and the career boost this could be, but her face is all […]

Soap Operatic

Hate Crush by Angelina M. Lopez

June 22, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Angelina Lopez bowled me over with her debut novel, Lush Money. Hate Crush, is a worthy sequel. When I started reading romance, I didn’t like contemporary romance because it all seemed to be Judith Krantz and Danielle Steele – ridiculously beautiful people, at least one of whom was incredibly wealthy, with high glamour problems and preposterous plots. If I was going to read that I wanted it to be set in the past. In the last 30 years, contemporary romance has become less focused on the […]

“Men of action, above all those whose actions are guided by love, live forever.” – Jose Marti

The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora by Pablo Cartaya

January 28, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Arturo Zamora and his family are tight — and I mean the whole family.  He and his extended family all live in the same apartment complex. The heart of the family is his Abuela, who still manages her restaurant “La Cocina” which she and her late husband opened when they emigrated here from Cuba. Her daughter is the master chef, but Abuela makes her daily rounds, greeting every customer — and her love and attentiveness is half the reason the restaurant is always packed (the […]

Poetic feels

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

December 29, 2018 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo is a coming of age story written in poetic verse. Xiomara Batista attends Catholic high school and forced by her mom to attend catechism classes. Her mom has a very strict idea of what her daughter should be. Boys are definitely off limits. Thus, she pours all her teenage angst into her prized notebook. Also lots of feelings about her classmate named Aman. It’s only when she joins the poetry club does she begin to find her voice. Unfortunately, she […]
