Happy April and Happy Poetry Month

All of Those Babies by Mylisa Larsen

Aunt Sue's Stories by Langston Hughes

Bless Our Pets : Poems of Gratitude for Our Animal Friends by Lee Bennett Hopkins

April 5, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Happy April and Happy Poetry Month. I am sure I will find other poetry books for kids, but I will start with three that I just found. All are available (or with the last one “soon” in April 2024) but all have been read via online reader copies. The first is All of Those Babies by Mylisa Larsen and illustrated by Stephanie Laberis . This book is one solid poem that rhymes and has repetition. The idea is how all babies, be they lizard, human […]

The Big Sea

The Big Sea by Langston Hughes

January 23, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

The introduction to this memoir written by Arnold Ramperstad tells us that Langston Hughes avoided writing his memoir when first asked to do so in his early 20s until he felt like he had lived long enough to have a story to tell. This is false modesty probably because the story he has is pretty wild already. Ramperstad also tells us that Hughes pulls some of his punches, especially his Communist-ties punches from several of his stories and poems, and well the memoir is not […]

When Langston Found Langston

Finding Langston by Lesa Cline-Ransome

March 30, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Finding Langston by Lesa Cline-Ransome is an interesting look at the late 1940s, Chicago, growing up and literature that was way too short. I would have enjoyed more of the history of the time and seen a bigger connection to the two people called Langston. Still, I enjoyed what I read but, like I said, there needed to be more: more of the history of the times (Why were the black families moving north? Why were the soldiers were coming back? Even the fact that […]

Sail Away on Poetry

May 25, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I do wonder what Langston Hughes would have thought of Ashley Bryan illustrating his poems. I would assume that he would enjoy the art as much as I do. In the signature style of Bryan, he gives life to poems with vibrant, powerful colors. The lines flow and are complimentary to the text of Hughes. The two art forms are paired nicely. Bryan has both a modern and classic feel to his work. And the words of Hughes still speak to us all these years […]
