Friends since the 1940s

Are You a Friend of Dorothy?: The True Story of an Imaginary Woman and the Real People She Helped by Kyle Lukoff

June 5, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Are You a Friend of Dorothy?: The True Story of an Imaginary Woman and the Real People She Helped is by Kyle Lukoff and illustrated by Levi Hastings. The fact that Lukoff is using the code phrase, “Are you a friend of Dorothy?” made it seem promising. And while they did not disappoint, as an adult reader, I’m still looking for more. […]

If You’re a kid or adult like Gavin

If You’re a Kid Like Gavin by Gavin Grimm and Kyle Lukoff

January 24, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If You’re a Kid Like Gavin things are not as easy as you might like them. You need to deal with gossip, bullying and having to tell your parents that they thought you were a girl, but you are really a boy and the name given at birth does not fit. You are a trans kid who at first, seemed to be okay at school, being themselves, then things took a turn. I like how Gavin Grimm and Kyle Lukoff presented this memoir. The story […]

One sibling on the way for a special big brother

When Aidan Became a Brother by Kyle Lukoff

June 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When Aidan Became a Brother is one of those books that can be a bit difficult to write about. Mostly because how do you talk about it without telling the whole story? Also, as a picture book, 250 words might be more than the entire book has. Therefore, I will say this book is a realistic journey from being born female to becoming Aidan. I am assuming this as Kyle Lukoff has had a similar journey themselves and therefore can honestly portray a child taking […]

A Storytelling of Ravens

May 21, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A Storytelling of Ravens seems like one thing by the cover, but here the old saying is true, “Do not judge a book by the cover.” The inside poem (for a lack of a better term) has a line about each animal and what their “group” is called in a clever sentence. There is a sloth of bears, a smack of jellyfish and (a term a dog lover perhaps would take glee in) a nuisance of cats. And for me, of course, a storytelling of […]
