I have additional rambling thoughts on Kindred

June 20, 2018 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I’ve finally made my way to reviewing our #CannonBookClub selection, Kindred. Did I ever tell you all how happy I was that this was the one we chose? Not that I wouldn’t have happily read any of our options, but Kindred has been lurking on my to read list a long time and it fulfills two of this year’s Read Harder Challenge tasks (read a genre fiction classic, read a sci-fi novel with a female protagonist by a female author). My review is probably going […]

In Kindred, Dana a black woman in the mid 1970s in America, is settling in to her new home with her husband when she is struck with a dizzy spell and is mysteriously and immediately transported to the time of slavery, to a plantation, and finds herself face-to-face with a scared little boy, the son of a plantation owner. Who is he? Why is she here? This story answers these questions and more as Dana finds herself tethered to this place, with little control over […]

Thanks to the CBR Book Club

June 13, 2018 by lumenatrix 3 Comments

One of my goals for CBR 10 was to take part in one of the Book Club Reads. When this title popped up as the book choice I felt pretty neutral about it; the description, for whatever reason, didn’t intrigue me at all. At the same time, it didn’t sound boring so I figured I would give it a shot. Man, oh man, thank you CBR voters who knew way better than me. I am so glad I read this book. This may end up […]

Cannon Book Club: Kindred

June 12, 2018 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

I tend to listen to an audio-book while driving, read a paperback or thin hardcover on my lunch break and then save thicker hardcover books for at home. My copy of Kindred was a paperback so it was on the lunch rotation which meant it took me a lot longer to read than it deserved. At this point I think we all know the gist of Butler’s Kindred but here is a quickie synopsis for the lone person who missed all the other reviews and/or Book Club discussion. […]

Book Club Discussion Post: Kindred

Kindred by Octavia Butler

June 8, 2018 by faintingviolet 49 Comments

The time has arrived (and no limbs were lost in the process); we’re going to spend the next two days talking about Kindred. It’s our “most popular” category Anniversary Read so I’m very interested to hear how you feel this book rates in your all-time Cannonball list. Ground rules remain the same as they always have. For those of you who might be joining in for #CannonBookClub for the first time (hello new friends!) all are welcome. All of our topics are numbered and we […]

Straight Forward Approach with Cutting Insights

June 4, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

After my reread, I tried to remember during which Cannonball Read I had originally discovered this novel, only to realize that I had done most of my Butler reading before I participated in CBR.  I had a short post on my now defunct blog where I mentioned it, but it’s been over ten years (!) since I read this so I had forgotten a lot of the details. Basic plot details: Dana, an African American woman living in California in 1976, starts getting called back […]
