Such a Fun Age, by Kiley Reid This was one I did not want to have to reduce to a catch-up post but here we are, too many books and too little time. Everyone everywhere is raving about Such a Fun Age and for a damn good reason. This is the rare book that is both quality good and can’t-put-it-down good. The story opens with Emira Tucker, part-time nanny to a wealthy family in Philadelphia, helping her employer out in a midnight emergency and taking her […]

This One Missed the Mark for Me

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

March 30, 2020 by Rachel Leave a Comment

This is a book about privilege, race, and the choices we all make in our lives that have an impact on each other. Set in Philadelphia, Such a Fun Age chronicles the Chamberlain family and their nanny Emira. The Chamberlains appear to be an upper-middle-class white family who recently moved to Philly after living the big life in New York City. Relatively new mom Alix missed her life and friends in New York City, and on her Instagram, she pretends she never left. Emira is […]

Reid’s debut novel definitely got a lot of advance press. Everyone was buzzing about it. For the most part, everything that I read highlighted the same plot point: The young black babysitter of a white little girl is detained and interrogated in a grocery store by a security guard because what-on-earth-would-a-little-white-girl-be-doing-under-the-care-of-a-black-woman-dressed-in-night club-attire-at-that-hour. Is the book about this incident? Yes, in part, but it is just an unfortunately recognizable incident that becomes a gateway to so much more. Emira is a bit adrift after graduating from college. […]

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

This was the January book club pick for the Reese Witherspoon book club, and a fun read to get through. I enjoyed the “book club” aspect as well, following along with prompts on Instagram and the loads of other folks tackling this book at the same time. On to the book! This book is clever. It starts with an embarrassing and racist encounter in a grocery store, Emira who is babysitting for Briar is accused by a security guard of kidnapping her. Emira is black, […]
