I keep telling myself, “I do not like horror…..”

Hide: The Graphic Novel by Kiersten White and Scott Peterson.

February 13, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I keep telling myself, I do not like horror. Yet, I keep picking up horror related books, and did so with Hide: The Graphic Novel. It is adapted from the novel by Kiersten White, illustrated by Veronica Fish and Andy Fish, with the adaptation by Scott Peterson. Now it isn’t “gory horror” but yes, there is gore (it is about 14 people trying to survive the “game” and well, the stakes are pretty high). It is icky and there is blood. But you know, tastefully […]

“Clean hearts and clean minds, cleanliness at all times! Nothing dirty, nothing bad, always happy, never sad!”

Mister Magic by Kiersten White

I continue to be baffled by the hAtReD for this author’s last adult book, Hide, which I thought was perfectly fine and a good time. But I’m not going to go out of my way to defend it. I didn’t like it that much. But I will defend this one loudly! Luckily, I think overall it is getting better reviews, but still not as good as I think it deserves. First of all, I think it was a mistake (not sure if the author’s or […]

Surf Dracula

Mister Magic by Kiersten White

June 15, 2024 by Jake 2 Comments

The Surf Dracula corollary began as a tweet regarding television. User @TopherFlorence… back in the day if u did a tv show called surf dracula you’d see that fool surfing every week in new adventures but in the streaming era the entire 1st season gotta be a long ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get to see him surf for 5 min in the finale Topher’s tweet is accurate. Too many shows nowadays are invested in origins and withholding. It […]

Mister Magic by Kiersten White

Thirty years after a tragic accident shut down production of the mysterious children’s program Mister Magic, the five remaining cast members are brought back together in a strange house in the desert, where they begin to realize their childhood is not exactly how they remembered it to be. Sometimes it’s fun to write one star reviews, because the story is not at all what was said on the tin and then I’m annoyed to have spent time with it. Other times, it’s tough to write […]

The Dark Carnival

Hide by Kiersten White

January 5, 2023 by Pooja 2 Comments

Fourteen people participate in a mysterious competition for a chance to win a life-changing amount of money. The challenge: to hide in a decrepit amusement park, and not get found out. But what the hiders don’t know is the true nature of the seeker… One of the worst ‘hot takes’ I ever read on the Internet was a post positing that there must be a limited number of souls to go around to all the billions of people on Earth, and that most people must […]

Hide

Hide by Kiersten White

Good lord. This was agonizing. I started this book for Halloween Book Bingo and it is now December people. This past week has been me cleaning up library borrows that I keep re-requesting but never want to finish. This had an interesting premise that quickly went to [redacted] and I got tired of reading it. The characters started off interesting, and then as a friend of mine said, they slid real quick into paper-thin caricatures. This was in the end, just a really bad horror […]
