A couple of treats

Sugar in Milk by Thrity Umrigar

The Night Before Eid: A Muslim Family Story by Aya Khalil

August 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

As I mentioned in a previous review I like picture books about different cultures, and I have been reading a lot of reader copies online, even though both titles I am going to mention are available for physical copy-owning I might just get a physical copy of Sugar in Milk as Khoa Le’s illustrations are wild, fun colors, details, and expressive in all ways. They are supporters of the story and their own characters. This Thrity Umrigar tale is a delightful, thoughtful and relatable story […]

This book inspired me to write some of my own poetry again

Great Gusts: Winds of the World and the Science Behind Them by Melanie Crowder and Megan Benedict

July 26, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Great Gusts: Winds of the World and the Science Behind Them is one of the most beautiful books I have read so far in 2023. The fact it does not come out until mid-March 2024 is the frustrating part as I want everyone to go out and purchase copies at their local independent bookstore now! The poetry is amazing as it covers the science of wind and is emotional. Both Melanie Crowder and Megan Benedict’s work is factual, but allows for the movement of a poem. The […]

A name by other other

Say My Name by Joanna Ho

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo Picture This:  I like these images. There are six people who are from different areas of the world. And all of them have one thing in common. They have a name. Now, that is not unusual, but what is unusual in Say My Name is how we learn of these names. Each one of their names is special in its own way. And each of the children tells us why their name is special, how it is connected to their people’s history, culture and what […]

Sister Magic

Beatrice Likes the Dark by Genevieve Tucholke

June 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Beatrice Likes the Dark while her sister Roo loves the light. Neither can understand the other’s love of spiders, cellars, stars (Beatrice), or the sun, flowers, and the days joys (Roo). But when Roo admits to being afraid of the dark, Beatrice does what any good big sister would do, and gives her a special piece of magic. Learning to appreciate and love each other (even if they cannot get behind the other’s personal tastes), the sisters create a happy medium. April Genevieve Tucholke’s text […]

I think we all could use some Making Happy in our lives

Making Happy by Sheetal Sheth

April 27, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Making Happy has been on the radar for a while now. After having seen it announced in newsletters and such, an email came to me from the publisher. The attachment was Making Happy by Sheetal Sheth. Books are my favorite kind of attachments and because of this one, I am excited to find a new book to recommend. With a modern tone, modern feelings, and modern coping mechanisms, this book about a mother who is ill. It is strong and thoughtful. The young girl of […]
