“Conventional lives are the perfect refuge if you are a terrible artist.”

The Family Fang by Kevin Wilson

December 31, 2021 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

Scrambling to get this review done! I’m two past my cannonball (queue shock) but want this one on the books as I completed it at the buzzer. This book was a gift of mine from a literary pal who read it, liked it, and thought of me. After I got a chapter or two into it I texted her and said that this book was weird and kind of good and maybe I liked it. That sentiment remained through the whole read. Camille and Caleb […]

Nothing to Love Here

Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson

January 16, 2021 by andtheIToldYouSos 2 Comments

This book came highly recommended, but it failed to ignite my interest. I had been looking forward to it for some time: a big-shot political family with black-sheep children who literally catch on fire when upset? Sounds fun! Except…that’s not the story. It’s the story of a fuck-up (her words) obsessed with another fuck-up of great wealth and privilege. It’s an ugly story about ugly people with some children (who do happen to catch fire when upset) caught in the middle. Listening to this book […]

f-bombs and fire extinguishers

Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson

October 25, 2020 by AnnaCollier 2 Comments

Kevin Wilson’s Nothing to See Here begins as the story of two young women, Lillian and Madison, in their freshman year of high school at a fancy boarding school in the Tennessee mountains.  Madison is the daughter of a wealthy family; Lillian is a scrappy local kid attending on scholarship.  Despite their differences, they become close friends. The story then moves forward about fifteen years (the book is vague on time, both in terms of the relations of events in the book to each other […]

A Fantastical Little Take on the Concept of Family Secrets

Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson

April 28, 2020 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

Funny enough, after finishing this book, my friend and I started watching I’m Not Okay With This together (see: video chatting while watching separately, hitting play at the same moment), and both that show and this novel involve young people who are unable to control innate abilities within themselves, that always seem to burst forth when the individual is angry or agitated in some way. But in both cases, this concept, while integral to the plot, is a vehicle for reaching into the deeper truths […]

When There’s Nothing Left to Burn

Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson

January 15, 2020 by Jenny S 2 Comments

This was such a delightfully weird novel that I burned through it than less than a day (pun intended.)  I remember an interview with the author on NPR awhile back and liking the premise—a woman is hired to take care of the step-children of a high school friend, whose husband is a senator with aspirations for higher office.  One wrinkle out of many is that the children catch on fire.  Spontaneously combust. They themselves are unharmed but they can easily set fire to anything or […]

Interesting Look at Family

October 14, 2017 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People interested in an exploration of what family means, told through an unconventional concept. In a nutshell: Researcher is interested in creating broader supports for families, and so enlists nine couples and one single mother to enroll in the Infinite Family project. Line that sticks with me: “David kissed her quickly, which struck Izzy as something he’d seen work out in a movie. She, on the other hand, hated the presumption that she would change her mind if she only made out with […]
