I really liked Crazy Rich Asians. I’ll still see the movie. I have high hopes. It was a mostly fun look at the immense level of wealth in Singapore, and how these uber-wealthy families live their lives out in the world. And I had some trouble with the second book, China Rich Girlfriend. All the details that had been amusingly shocking in the first book were now just shocking and a bit disgusting. The sheer waste of money on things like clothes and jewelry and […]
More reckless spending on display in the name of excess…
China Rich Girlfriend is Kevin Kwan’s sequel to Crazy Rich Asians. Even though the first book was imperfect in many ways, I really loved it because it was sort of the first time I’ve seen Asians portrayed in an atypical fashion in English-language fiction. I also recognized a lot of my Singapore family in the first book, so I think that helped as well. That being said, I’m really not as keen about the sequel. Rachel Chu and Nick Young is back, as is Nick’s mother, […]
Su Yi’s dying, who’s got the will?
The short, short review: YESSSSSSS! The short review: the Youngs of Tyersall Park are back in fine form in the last entry in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. If you enjoyed either of the first two books, you’re going to want to read this one. The long review: from the end of Crazy Rich Asians, readers had to know this book was coming. With Nick, the long-presumed heir of Tyersall Park, disinherited, who was going to get the estate and all that fabulous wealth? Ethereal […]
The last one was fun. This one felt more like homework.
Remember a few years ago when the ridiculously fun Crazy Rich Asians came out? And we all devoured it and laughed and said, well, that was crazy but it was fun, and then forgot about it? Well, our favorite (and lots of our not-so-favorite) crazy, rich Asians are back in the sequel. China Rich Girlfriend is still the story of Rachel and Nick, and how their marriage has broken apart Nick’s family. But this book is about soooooooo much more. And I don’t necessarily mean that in […]
Richer than the people richer than God
China Rich Girlfriend, the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians, was all over the place. It’s a testament to Kevin Kwan’s ability to craft interesting characters that this is getting 3 stars instead of 2. I think the makings of a great story are in this novel, but his editors needed to help Kwan focus the story more. Spoilers ahead if you haven’t read Crazy Rich Asians (the first book). It’s been two years since the end of book 1 and Rachel and Nick are getting […]
Richer Than God
This was one of those books that takes over your life for a couple of days while you speed through it. It was incredibly fun. Rachel Chu, an ABC (American Born Chinese), agrees to spend the summer with her boyfriend in Singapore, but she doesn’t know what she’s getting into. Her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, is from one of the oldest and richest families in Singapore. His family has plenty of opinions about his future wife so even though Rachel has a PhD in economics and […]
