“Nowhere in the world are there to be found people richer than the Chinese.” ~ IBN BATUTA (FOURTEENTH CENTURY)

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

CBR11 Bingo: Travel Like most people I fell head over heels in love with the rich world director Jon M Chu created with last year’s Crazy Rich Asians but I hadn’t gotten around to reading the novel it was based on. In a way I am glad I saw the movie first because it pales in comparison to the source materiel and I would have probably been disappointed. Whenever I read the book after watching the movie I find it a lot easier to enjoy […]

Rich People Problems Comes with Backstory

Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan

February 26, 2019 by bronte1848 2 Comments

As I have stated in a previous post I love learning about other cultures. Rich People Problems, the third book in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, provides readers like me with insight into a number of different cultures as it tells the story of the Young family and all the relatives on the outskirts.  While the previous books focus more on Nick and Rachel this book also tells more about Kitty Pong and adds to the backstory of Su Yi, Nicks grandmother and the family […]

Rich People Problems – Neat wrap-up for the trilogy

Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan

February 9, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

The end of the “Crazy Rich Asians” trilogy is a mostly satisfying romp, with more high drama and preposterous situations that we have come to love from Kwan. The characters are consistent from the previous books: Rachel is sweet and wooden, Eleanor is domineering and awful, Nick is charming and charming, Astrid is otherworldly, Eddie is a screeching gasbag. And so forth. Su Yi is on her deathbed and in this final act, we find out what happens to her estate, and all of the […]

I am genuinely glad I finished out the series

Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan

So I reviewed and loved the first one, was supremely let down by the second, and came into the third with low expectations and hey, it surpassed them! In my head, it went down like this – Crazy Rich Asians was a blockbuster success, so the publishers jumped on Kwan to write more. China Rich Girlfriend was his initial “wtf fine fine fine!” with all the prep and consideration that allowed but he had that plus more time to get Rich People Problems done. And maybe it was the […]

Crazy, Rich, Crazy Rich

December 9, 2018 by Fiat.Luxury 1 Comment

The Fug Girls made me read this.  The photos of the premiers of Crazy Rich Asians were all just so glam.  I obviously had to see the movie.  I mean:   But I can’t see the movie if I haven’t read the book.  So I obviously had to read the book. By now you probably know the main plot: woman (Rachel) goes to Singapore to meet boyfriend’s (Nick) family.  Turns out he’s rich like whoa.  She is blindsided by the money, the lifestyle, and the […]

Crazy Good: lives up to the crazy hype

November 18, 2018 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

The hot picks shelf at my library is a thing to behold. Even when I am there just to attend book club, or to bring the kiddo and I “don’t need any books” this display on the way in and out always catches my eye. I of course had heard of the phenomenon (both film, and book) Crazy Rich Asians but hadn’t picked it up yet. However, yet another book club I am in has it on its list and I am a sucker for […]
