Perfect summer anthology for the anti-romance beach reader

Otherworld Chills by Kelley Armstrong

June 24, 2021 by MegsDarcy Leave a Comment

My summer reading has already been cut short by longer days, and the end of restrictions meaning I want to DO something. (Not that reading isn’t doing something, but I meant exercising my body more than mind). With that in mind, one of my favourite authors, Kelley Armstrong has a couple of anthologies of her short stories hanging around. I had read the entire ‘Otherworld’ series but hadn’t gotten through the anthologies yet. This book in particular has some stories of secondary characters from Otherworld […]

Two stories that couldn’t be more different

Money: The True Story of a Made-Up Thing by Jacob Goldstein

We Are All Monsters Here by Kelley Armstrong

November 8, 2020 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

Money: The True Story of a Made-Up Thing by Jacob Goldstein (4 stars) What, exactly, is money? How does it work? Why does it work? How did it develop? What I’ve always assumed, and what I think most people who think about it assume, is that money evolved from early barter economies. Instead of selling, for instance, crops for money, early farmers would exchange crops for things that they needed. So a farmer would have to find, say, a potter and exchange a bushel of […]

Otherworld Teens!

Wolf's Bane by Kelley Armstrong

Wolf's Curse by Kelley Armstrong

July 1, 2020 by Jen K 1 Comment

I loved Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series – I think I had read some of the Sookie Stackhouse novels when I read this one but while I lost interest in Sookie, I kept coming back to Armstrong’s diverse (from a magical power perspective) cast of characters. Now, I may mostly talk about Toby Daye and Kate Daniels, but that doesn’t mean I have forgotten about the Otherworld. These were really my starter series that got me interested in other women written urban fantasy […]

How Casey got to Rockton, and other stories

January 25, 2018 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is the beginning of the Rockton series.  We get to see Casey and Diana (Casey’s BFF) in the “real” world prior to their entry to Rockton.  We also get to see how Casey and Dalton’s love affair started.  So I believe I talked about how Casey got into Rockton a little bit in my review for book two.  If not, sorry, semi-spoilers!  I liked knowing the full backstory about Casey and Blaine, and who Casey left behind when she fled to Rockton.  I also […]

Living Off the Grid – What could possibly go wrong?

July 2, 2016 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

I’ve read a few of Kelley Armstrong’s previous books—mostly ones featuring werewolves—but this thriller looked like a fun summer read and that pretty much defines it.  There are some things I liked about it and some things that annoyed me but it was a quick read that kept my attention and kept me guessing about just enough plot points. Here’s the basic setup.  Casey Duncan is a successful police detective who has a dark secret. When she was in college, she killed her boyfriend but […]

The B plot is much stronger then the A plot, and that’s ok

February 17, 2016 by melanir Leave a Comment

Book two of this series picks up an hour or two after book one ends. I dove in head first and emerged a few hours later at the end of the book. While I liked Omens, I found Visions to be a lot more enjoyable. This may be because the set up was done and things were all in place so now we could really explore the world that Armstrong is building here. The A plot is a murder mystery. Someone leaves the body of a […]
