Red or Dead

The Pledge by Kathleen Kent

December 1, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

This one followed the same pattern as the Hunger Games trilogy: interesting first book followed by an excellent second and a concluding one that basically made me say “Eh, ok, I guess that’s an ending.” Part of why I loved (indeed loved) The Burn, the second book in the Betty Rhyzyk trilogy, is because I thought Kathleen Kent did an excellent job covering Betty’s PTSD from the end of the events of the first book. Too often, series writers put their characters through hell only to have them […]

Big Red

The Burn by Kathleen Kent

October 31, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

The Dime, Kathleen Kent’s first Betty Rhyzyk novel, went from being an interesting if conventional police procedural mystery to something else. If you appreciate the out of nowhere, somewhat bananas turn (as I did), you’d probably be moving on to the second book to see how she dealt with it. If not, you’d likely skip it. When I read the reviews for it, opinions were mixed and I get it. The twist was perhaps imperfectly handled and may have felt gimmicky. But I thought it made […]

Where there are women, there are witches

The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent

August 16, 2020 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR12 BINGO: Repeat This is a repeat of the Book Club category, as my social distancing book club meets again in September. For this meeting of my book club, we decided to go a little heavier and read this historical fiction about the Salem witch trials. Author Kathleen Kent has a vested interest in the topic, as she is a tenth-generation descendant of Martha Carrier, one of the first women accused and tried as a witch in Salem in 1692. The Heretic’s Daughter looks a […]

Mess In Texas

The Dime by Kathleen Kent

February 23, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

The Dime is an interesting book. It purports to be one thing, and it is for most of the story’s first 2/3rds. And then it becomes something else in the final 1/3rd. How you feel about the book will likely hinge on how you feel about that final 1/3rd. Let’s start with those first 2/3rds: It was okay. Betty, the protagonist, is a narcotics officer with the Dallas Police Department, and a New York transplant. Kent doesn’t waste a lot of time comparing the two different […]

Badass lesbian detectives ftw

The Dime by Kathleen Kent

May 5, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

4.5 stars. This book left me with a massive book hangover. Incredibly violent in almost every way, so just a content heads up if you’re thinking about reading this. If you like mysteries and you haven’t given this one a chance, I would snag it as soon as you can. Betty Rhyzyk is tough as fucking nails, not surprising since she comes from a long line of Brooklyn police detectives. She never thought she’d leave New York, but finds herself in Dallas with her partner […]

There’s gold in that there swamp!

April 3, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Picked this one up on a whim from Half Price Books, and it turned out to be a pretty good read. The Outcasts is set in Texas in the 1800s, and I really enjoyed the aspects involving across the state (I live in Dallas, so it was fun recognizing some of the landscape). “Dr. Tom had said that Texas was the only place he had ever found that, when it killed you, it didn’t forget about you.” The Outcasts focuses on two sets of characters. Lucinda works […]
