“People value shiny stones and lucky charms, but they forget that the most powerful talismans of all are the stories that we tell to ourselves and to others.”

Bingo square: Shelfie In 1862, a group of artists gather at a manor house owned by one of their own, Edward Radcliffe, to spend the summer together creating. By the time their stay is over, a young woman is dead and another has disappeared, taking a priceless heirloom with her. Is it a secret if I figure it out less than halfway through?

The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton

December 20, 2019 by octothorp Leave a Comment

That’s an awfully snarky review title from someone who quite liked this book, but there was a point where a character shows the tiniest hint of a dark side and immediately I thought “yep, there’s the plot twist. I bet REDACTED is actually REDACTED and at some point REDACTED.”  And despite the fact that I was 100% correct, I still enjoyed finding out how it all came together, which is the mark of a pretty well-written book. I also read this book at what may […]

A Slight Change in the Formula

The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton

August 23, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Over the years, Kate Morton has turned into a must buy for me.  She is a bit of a comfort read – family mysteries uncovered, slightly tragic stories with the potential for hope and better in future generations.  There’s always a twist and turn, but she still manages to surprise and create interesting characters. The Clockmaker’s Daughter is a bit of a break in the norm for her.  While in most ways, it is like her previous novels, it is also more focused on a […]

Kill Your Darlings

The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton

Bingo Update: This is my Reading the TBR square. Kate Morton books automatically go on that list once their publication dates are announced! I’m on the record as a HUGE Kate Morton fan. So much so that I buy each of her books in soft cover so I can see them all on my bookshelf (which is a rarity these days in an age where I love the convenience of my Kindle). She has a way with prose, mystery, and history that I just can’t […]

The Life of a Home As Told by the Ghost that Haunts It

The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton

January 26, 2019 by jomidi 2 Comments

I want to start by saying I loved this book. It was a wonderful journey through time as you see the inhabitants of a British country estate over the course of 150 years. It is beautifully written. The characters are well drawn. The interactions between characters over the years is wonderful. The plot is tight and I loved the various surprises, including the mysterious location of the priceless blue stone. I have not read any Kate Morton books before. I met her at a book […]

A beautiful, melancholy story from my Book Exchange buddy

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton

January 6, 2019 by Bothari43 1 Comment

I have a friend who likes to loan me sad books, and when I finish one and say “OMG that was sad!”, she’ll say, “I know, but wasn’t it SO well written?” I have a feeling that my friend and KatSings would get along well. My Book Exchange buddy got me this lovely, sprawling book, which is beautifully written and has an air of pervasiveness melancholy about it. I adored it anyway, and I appreciate that KatSings got me to read something that would not […]
