“The cynical would say there was only one reason a high-profile specialist finally took up the cause. On June 7, 1925, the first male employee of the United States Radium Corporation died.”

The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women by Kate Moore

Having been curious about the “Radium Girls”, it was interesting to read a book dedicated solely to them (I had previously read about them in passing in both The Poisoner’s Handbook and A Beautiful Poison). I just wish the writing was not so “rah! rah! rah! Stars and Stripes Forever”, going into the plucky, industrious, indomitable spirit of the women. So basically I spent the entire book having either or in my mind and it was slightly distracting. And also horrible, because this is not […]

A Dark Story That Deserves a Better Storyteller

The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore

April 12, 2025 by Unpainted Huffhines Leave a Comment

Kate Moore’s The Radium Girls is, at first glance, a long-overdue study of the early twentieth century female factory workers who were hired to paint watch dials and hands with radium paint. Moore focuses on the workers at two plants, one in Newark, New Jersey, and one in Ottawa, Illinois. The women were encouraged, in fact required to “lip point,” to put the uranium-coated paintbrushes in their mouths to wet them and create the necessary fine point for the watches. Bosses never told them that radium could […]

The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore

This book was infuriating, but very interesting. If you’re looking to rage-out at the patriarchy, The Woman They Could Not Silence will certainly do the trick. But also, because Elizabeth Packard was a badass who changed things for thousands of people in her lifetime and many more into the future, you get a happyish ending as well to lift you back from your cleansing rage. Elizabeth Packard was committed to an asylum in the 1860s by her husband; because he said she was insane, she was […]

Courage Like Kate: The True Story of a Girl Lighthouse Keeper by Anna Crowley Redding

June 22, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have read a few things about Kate Moore, but ironically, they were not as “deep” as this picture book. They might have had more story, but they did not have the emotion of this Anna Crowley Redding tale. Courage Like Kate: The True Story of a Girl Lighthouse Keeper will come out summer of 2022. And you must preorder you copy today at your favorite independent bookstore (or you are welcomed to borrow mine if you do not have one). This illustrated by Emily […]

“Lip . . . Dip . . . Paint.”

The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore

December 31, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

What I have to say about this book can be whittled down to one classic Samuel L. Jackson moment in cinema: And I truly mean that. Anyone with an ounce of empathy will find this one a tough go. Moore extensively researched the women this story is about, and she pulled not only from scholarly books and articles about them, but from their own personal correspondence, journals, and memories from friends and family. The result is that you get a clear picture of just exactly […]

A Story I Should Have Learned In History

The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore

April 2, 2020 by randirock Leave a Comment

This is hard to write because there are already so many great Cannonball reviews about this book. So, I will just start by saying – You need to read this book! This story should be taught in every school. I was amazed that I had never heard of the Radium Women, and now I will never forget them. During WWI, women were hired to paint dials on watches using a brilliant new material – paint infused with radium. This paint mixture was lauded for its […]
