Kate’s back, baby!

Magic Tides by Ilona Andrews

January 22, 2023 by Malin 2 Comments

4.5 stars While this book is the start of a new chapter in the lives of Kate Daniels and her family, I suspect this book will work a lot better if you’ve read at least some of the previous thirteen books and various novellas. As always, I would recommend strongly skipping the first book (as do the authors themselves). Start with book 2, Magic Burns. Set seven years after Magic Triumphs (and about two years before the events of Blood Heir), Kate, her former Beast-Lord […]

“You know what they say. Happy wife, happy life.”

Magic Tides by Ilona Andrews

Is this book perfect? No. Is it perfect for me right now? Yes. 5 stars. Do I have time to reread Blood Heir? I do not, but I probably will anyway. Kate and Curran, along with their 8 year old son, Conlan have moved to Wilmington, North Carolina to get away from their notoriety in Atlanta. They bought a Fort, which they are renovating to make it a homey sort of castle. They’ve got Conlan registered at an expensive school. They have a contractor. They […]

This is basically non-stop action.

Magic Breaks (Kate Daniels, #7) by Ilona Andrews

To be honest, I thought the confrontation that happens in this book wouldn’t happen until the last—or maybe the penultimate—book in the series. So I was refreshingly surprised! For most of this book I had no idea where it was going, and then it went there! And then after that it shook some things up that I didn’t think would ever have the possibility to get shaken up, but I’m glad they did. All of that sounds very vague, but this is a review of […]

The Pack goes to Europe.

Magic Rises (Kate Daniels, #6) by Ilona Andrews

This is my favorite of these books so far. I loved the getting-the-team-together atmosphere, the fish-out-of-water aspect of Kate, Curran, Andrea, et al. faffing around in Europe. It was interesting to see a different setting in this world, and I liked how being far away from home changed the dynamics of Kate’s relationships with the Pack. I also just liked the clarity of the story, and how because Kate and co. are also trying to find their way in unfamiliar territory, there’s a neat symmetry […]

“It’s never a good thing when the black volhv says ‘Uh-oh’ and then runs for his life.”

Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels, #5.5) by Ilona Andrews

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 25/30 I spent most of this book angry with Raphael, and I don’t think the book (or Raphael) did enough groveling to get me back to liking him the same way I did before, though Andrea doesn’t seem to be having that issue by the end. I just really wanted him to acknowledge that although Andrea didn’t behave perfectly, either, he was the one that bailed on their relationship first, and he was the one who lashed […]

‘Andrea raised her hand. “This is the hand that slapped Aunt B.” “Maybe you should have it gold-plated.” “Here, you can touch it, since you’re my best friend.”‘

Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, #5) by Ilona Andrews

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 19/30 I somehow missed reviewing this book, even though I reviewed the two books in this series I read after this one. How that happened, no idea. Let’s see if I can even remember what happened in this book without getting events from later (or previous) books mixed up in it. I know this was the one where Kate starts her own business, and business is not doing great, until some guy asks her to look into […]
