“I guess we’re almost friends now, or as friendly as you can get when you’re not one hundred percent sure the other person isn’t framing you for murder.” (Blackout Bingo Card)

4.5 stars CBR17 Bingo: School (The Breakfast Club with murder. So much high school drama) On a Monday afternoon, five high schoolers find themselves in detention after someone planted phones in their bags. They all claim the phones are not theirs, but the teacher is not listening. There is Cooper, the star athlete, with a promising career in baseball ahead of him. There is Addy, always perfectly put together and the homecoming princess. There is Nate, the school’s bad boy, who is on probation for […]

One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus

CBR 16 Bingo – Part 2: The second instalment in the series. Since Simon died, there have been many gossip blogs trying to copy his, but none as interesting as this new one, which, instead of being a blog, it’s a game of truth or dare. The first target learns that if you refuse to play it is an automatic truth, and chaos ensues from there. People are making their choices, and one, eventually, results in death, causing a new mystery at Bayview High. Personally, […]

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

November 8, 2024 by Bibliophile Leave a Comment

CBR 16 Bingo – Part 1: The first book in what I originally thought was a duology but actually isn’t. It’s still the 1st part, even if it isn’t out of 2 parts. You know a book has my interest if the description on Goodreads starts with “Pay close attention and you might solve this.” It tells the story of 5 kids all stuck in detention. However, only 4 make it out of the classroom alive. The police believe the death wasn’t an accident. Yet, […]

Hey on the last day of the month, it finally snowed in New York! Huzzah! Dead Wind**** I can’t talk about why I like this book without even the mildest of spoilers if you’ve been following the series. So I’ll talk about what I appreciate. I’ve been in an on-and-off reading slump the last two months. It’s been hard to finish stuff. Tessa Wegert’s Shana Merchant series really feels like the exception to the rule. I like her writing, her pacing, her protagonist. All good. One […]

“News always reached Miss Marple, one way or another.”

Marple: Twelve New Stories by Various

December 29, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I would read more of these Agatha Christie short story collections featuring notable authors, for sure. Even the ones where Americans tried and failed to capture that British Marple feeling were entertaining in their failure. But most of these stories were pretty successful! One nailed it completely. Highlights for me were the stories from Ruth Ware (I know!), Naomi Alderman, Elly Griffiths, Kate Mosse, and Leigh Bardugo. This may be the easy way out, but I’ve just copied and pasted my Goodreads status update mini-reviews […]

You'll Be the Death of Me by Karen M. McManus

January 17, 2022 by dsbs42 4 Comments

If you read my review of her last book, this one is going to be more of the same. (Once again – THREE CHARACTERS, KAREN. Why are you doing this to me?) Karen McManus is basically my YA Liane Moriarty, in that I will read whatever light mystery she writes and enjoy it no matter how slight, because she’s good at creating characters I like to spend time with. And also the first books of theirs I read were the best and it’s been somewhat […]
