if women were “naturally” anything, societies wouldn’t spend so much time trying to police every aspect of their lives

The Geek Feminist Revolution by Kameron Hurley

November 9, 2025 by vega-table Leave a Comment

I found The Geek Feminist Revolution by Kameron Hurley because I needed a palate cleanser after some 19th century melancholia. And it worked. If you want something that isn’t Eline Vere by Louis Coperus, I can highly recommend this book. A lot has happened in feminism and geekery since the book was published in 2016, shortly after gamergate (which was covered) and shortly before Trump was elected and the me too movement blew up in 2017. I got ready to abandon the book when I […]

The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley

January 8, 2021 by Bothari43 9 Comments

In the future, the world is run by giant corporations. Everyone lives and works for one of “The Big Five.” It used to be “the Big Seven,” but a couple of wars took care of that. There are Residents and Citizens with a few more rights and opportunities, and then there are the “ghouls” who have to starve and scrape by in the streets. Years ago, a group of scientists and terraformers settled on Mars, and now they’re back and attacking Earth. New soldiers are […]

The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley

Warning, this review contains mild spoilers for the early parts of this book. Do you ever start reading a book and get the feeling that the author showed their hand too early? I was feeling that way when I started Kameron Hurley’s The Light Brigade. I had just gotten to the end of chapter two when I put the book down and thought. “Right, I think I know where we’re heading here. Hurley’s pulling a Paul Verhoeven on me. This book is going to be […]

The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley

In the outer rim of the universe, a war is waging. A group of world-ships known as the Legion travel the stars, slowly decaying and dying, while each lord of the ship fights with others, scavenging for scraps to save their own worlds. Zan awakes with no memory, but is told by her sister, Jayd, that only she can save them. Only she can enter the world-ship known as the Mokshi and lead them all to salvation. But Zan has no choice in the matter, […]

Bring the light

The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley

November 13, 2019 by Carriejay 4 Comments

Dietz is a grunt in a war with Mars. New technology allows humans to be broken down into light and transported elsewhere – to Mars or other areas of Earth instantaneously. But Dietz starts having bad drops, falling out of sync with her unit, moving around in time. Are they really experiencing the war in a non-linear fashion, or have they come back wrong? Starting with Dietz’s experiences as a new recruit and going through basic training, The Light Brigade takes us on a journey […]

For all the brutal women

August 5, 2018 by Dusty Highway Leave a Comment

CBR10Bingo: Listicles When I had my embarrassing epiphany this spring that my CBR reading list and library were unacceptably skewed toward male authors, I spent a number of hours googling female authors, particularly those in genres with which I’m less familiar. One of the best sources I found was a list called “27 Female Authors Who Rule Sci-Fi and Fantasy Right Now”, several of which I’ve purchased already and even more that are high on my wishlist.  My most recent read from those recommendations was […]
