Teenagers can still be bratty, even when they’re immortal

In the Garden of Iden by Kage Baker

February 2, 2020 by Bothari43 1 Comment

This sounded like an interesting take on time travel, and there was a kernel of a cool idea in there. Sometime in the future, time travel is invented, but it only works in very limited ways: you can’t go to the future, you can’t change recorded history, etc. So the super-rich company that invented it also invents immortality, which also comes with rules: it only works when you catch a human very young and adaptable. So, they start sending operatives into the past to ‘recruit’ […]

Sand and Sea, and a Little Victorian Mystery

The Hotel Under the Sand by Kage Baker

July 11, 2019 by Ale Leave a Comment

There’s a huge bargain book shop not far from my house where my dad and I sometimes go to spend a Saturday morning thumbing through the racks. Books are literally stacked to the ceiling and there’s not much organization, but you can pick up hardbacks for $2.00, and it’s fun just to see what’s there. The Hotel Under the Sand had been tossed on a shelf amidst a bunch of nature books and non-fiction, but the title caught my eye. I’d never heard of Kage […]

Hooray for Hollywood… eventually

June 12, 2018 by MsWas Leave a Comment

So far, hands down this is the best book so far in “The Company” series. It’s the first one I read, *gasp* OUT OF ORDER! But what a killer title, how could I resist? I was young and naive. 2018 me would never do such a thing! The book starts off with Mendoza in a private hearing in 1863, and right away, she confesses to the two auditors (Company men) that she’s killed seven mortal men. We see that she’s eating Theobromos, the chocolate that intoxicates […]

Wily Coyote

May 27, 2018 by MsWas Leave a Comment

Kage Baker’s “Company” series began with a volume focused on Mendoza the botanist, and in this second volume in the series the narration turns to the man who made her what she is, Joseph. A Facilitator Grade One with the company for thousands of years, Joseph was the one who spotted Mendoza during the Spanish Inquisition and recruited her. In Sky Coyote, it’s 1699, a century and a half since Joseph was the head of the family in Tudor England during Mendoza’s doomed romance. The […]

24th Century Schizoid Botanist

March 18, 2018 by MsWas 7 Comments

I looked back and I can’t believe it’s been almost three years since I wrote a review of Still Life, the first book in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series. I’ve been so happy to see a lot of you are enjoying them too. The Company series by Kage Baker is my next recommendation, but I’m not going to promise you’ll like them. I will say that I love them, and I hope you do too. Of course you must pick up the first book, In the […]
