“Your hand is unconscionably soft, Miss Eversea”

What I Did for a Duke by Julie Anne Long

December 17, 2020 by Emmalita 8 Comments

In the comments of my review of two contemporary age gap romances, Daddy Crush and Your Dad Will Do, Mrs. Julien reminded me of What I Did for a Duke. I first reviewed this back in 2015 and looking back at my review all I really see is how much I valued (and continue to value) Malin and Mrs. Julien. This book is a tour de force and I don’t think I appreciated that the first time I read it. I haven’t reread any of […]

Revenge in the form of pranks is dumb and other lessons

Angel in a Devil's Arms (The Palace of Rogues #2) by Julie Anne Long

August 14, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

This is the sequel to Lady Derring Takes a Lover and it is excellent. I reviewed the first one a while ago here and unli ke most romance series where you can really pick up any book out of order, you’ll miss out on plot and meeting a lot of the characters that are central to this novel if you don’t read the first in the series before this one. Plot: Now that the Palace on the Grand Thames is doing pretty okay, the Way Full […]

Still just as good as I remembered it

What I Did for a Duke by Julie Anne Long

February 18, 2020 by Malin 2 Comments

I first read and reviewed this book back in 2011 (when it came out), during Cannonball III. My original review, which among other things contains a plot summary, can be found here. If you do take a look at my previous review (or just check my rating of this book), you can see that the rather unlikely romance between Miss Genevieve Eversea Lord Alexander Moncrieffe, the Duke of Falconbridge is one of my absolute favourites. I loved it utterly when I first read it back in […]

They shot the penis off a statue and somehow it wasn’t enough

Like No Other Lover by Julie Anne Long

January 2, 2020 by Nart 4 Comments

Julie Anne Long is a terrific author. She has a gift for creating fully realized characters out of even the most periphery characters that have virtually no space on the page. She treats her characters with intense, borderline radical compassion in a world that loves to categorize people into Good or Bad as quickly and irrevocably as possible.   This talent is probably why I am so deeply disappointed in this book.   Like No Other Lover is the second book in Pennyroyal Green series, which […]

Round 2 at the Boarding Home With Lots of Rules

Angel in a Devil's Arms by Julie Anne Long

December 29, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Angelique Breedlove and her business partner Delilah were on the brink of having to give up on their boarding house when an agent came in and rented their best room for his client for his convenience.  All of the previous novel occurred without their mystery guest, but now he is here. Lucien Durand, Viscount Bolt, has returned to London after years abroad.  In fact, most of society thought he had died, drowning in the Thames a decade before after a night of drinking.  Turns out, […]

Didn’t really work for me, but will give the author a couple more tries. Yes, Malin and Mrs. J, I will be reading #5 next :)

The Perils of Pleasure (Pennyroyal Green, #1) by Julie Anne Long

December 20, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

This just never really clicked for me. I’m going to try a couple more books by this author and see how it goes, though. I had a good enough time with it, but I never really connected with the characters outside of a handful of moments, and I didn’t think the main couple really connected with each other, either. I also felt the central premise was kind of wasted. It started out pretty great. I like the concept of the feuding families being the center […]
