You’ll like it if you can get past a major WTF

May 2, 2017 by alwaysanswerb 5 Comments

So, it took me until now to get around to this romance classic, and I admit to experiencing joyful laughter a few times at what a thorough template this book is for so many of the tropes that I’ve experienced later, as they’re being lovingly upended some of the more satirical, referential romance authors. And I don’t mean any of that in a snarky way: there was such a delightful guilelessness to this book that made it so simple to enjoy. Here’s the Goodreads summary: […]

After a month away I have come back to be contrary

April 29, 2017 by Ellepkay 7 Comments

I know this book is the unpopular one in the Bridgerton series around these parts and I am here to vehemently disagree.  This is book 5 in the Bridgerton series, and was one of my two favorites the first time I read the series.  That was pre-Cannonball for me, so I was very surprised when I came here and found it disparaged.  I thought that maybe I wasn’t remembering it fully, so decided on a re-read.  I stand by my earlier assessment – I am […]

In which Scots are comic relief and snow is the most effective matchmaker

March 3, 2017 by alwaysanswerb 1 Comment

3.5 stars The Lady Most Willing is a 3-for-1 romance brought to you by kidnapping, drafty Scottish castles, and a really egregious plot strumpet*. The charmingly flimsy plot is this: a batty laird wants so much to ensure the succession of his drafty Scottish castle that he kidnaps the most eligible local women during a storm — ensuring their being sufficiently trapped in the castle — with the intention of presenting them to his nephew(? It’s been a few weeks; I forget.) The complications are […]

Escape into a Fiction of the Past

February 1, 2017 by sarah_jwh 1 Comment

This review is for the audiobook version of What Happens in London, by Julia Quinn. This story was a lot of fun! Perfect for when you’re feeling stressed and need an escape. Lady Olivia Rutland hears a rumor about her new neighbor and begins spying on him. What she doesn’t know is that he’s a spy. Sir Harry Valentine works for the War Office, translating Russian documents. He notices his neighbor spying on him while he works and decides he should investigate. There is a […]

Julia Quinn goes Georgian

December 27, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Sibylla “Billie” Bridgerton has always been a tomboy. As a girl, she ran wild with the neighbouring Rokesby children, and it’s been long expected that she’ll end up marrying either of the younger sons, Edward or Andrew. She’s doesn’t really mind the idea herself, but marriage is the furthest thing from her mind, even after her best friend, Mary Rokesby goes off to marry her eldest brother George’s best friend. After all, if Billie gets married, whose going to oversee the running of […]

“She’s my little sister. Mine to torture and mine to protect.”

December 19, 2016 by faintingviolet 18 Comments

The end of 2016 finds me reading and reviewing quite a few Romance novels. This is my third in recent weeks. I decided to read the second four books in Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series this year, which meant it was time to make sure I hit that goal and finally get to Gregory’s book, On the Way to the Wedding. When I started the Bridgerton series in 2015, I knew from the romance readers around Cannonball Read that these were peak Quinn books, and I […]
