My daughter requests that I sing these books to her now. I can never remember the melody I invented the last time – but they always work in song form.

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson

The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson

The Giant Jumperee by Julia Donaldson

The Smeds and the Smoos by Julia Donaldson

Like most parents (I hope), my wife and I read to our kids every night before bed. My son (who excels at reading) reads to us every night as well (and is currently making his way through Jeff Smith’s Bone – a personal favorite of mine). Julia Donaldson has long held a special place on their bookshelves. I haven’t reviewed any children’s books before, but I read The Gruffalo to my daughter tonight (for probably the hundredth time) and decided to review some by my […]

My Two Dads and Me by Michael Joosten

The Smeds and the Smoos by Julia Donaldson

Every Little Letter by Deborah Underwood

Today’s books range from ABC and 123 learning to letting you know that you can do anything if you try to a girl growing antlers and a boy waking up flat. And when you find a handful of books that deal with being different and different is okay, the only thing you can do is write reviews about them so others will read them too. I found a board book the other day called My Two Dads and Me. It is written by Michael Joosten. […]

A nice story and a message all in one

Freddie and the Fairy by Julia Donaldson

February 19, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Two things I do when I am at work: doodle on the purchase order I am calling in when left on hold too long and look at customer special orders when I am processing them. I was looking at a special order the other day when I saw a small picture book called Freddie and the Fairy.  I did not recognize the name Karen George but seem to know their illustrations. I did know that Julia Donaldson has several books that can be all over […]

What the Ladybug Heard at the Zoo by Julia Donaldson

Once Upon A Time there was a girl who read picture books. A lot of picture books. And because they were different styles she knew that not all books would be a home-run for her. Sadly, these four books fell into that category. Yet, there was something about each one she knew someone would enjoy. Therefore, that made her want to share them with you, her adoring reading public. These four books are from a late night reading marathon that came from wanting to read […]

The Alpha of Alphabet books

December 10, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Animalphabet by Julia Donaldson is a very clever way of making an alphabet book. You start with a small “story” about an ant. And then find out what is bigger than an ant on the B page and so on throughout the book. There is none of that “A is for Ant or A = Ant. The End” to the style. The pages format could make it difficult for the very young to read it. You have hidden flaps that are not always obvious to […]

Books Help Keep Kids’ Hearts Open in Fearful Times

October 29, 2018 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I teach an ethics class for little kids on Sunday mornings. It’s a small group and the kids don’t come every Sunday, because lives are complicated. The group ranges in age from 3 to 9, so it can be a challenge to find things that hold their interest.
