Born Hungry: Julia Child Becomes the French Chef by Alex Prud’Homme

March 2, 2022 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

Julia Child was just bada$$. Working in the Office of Strategic Services, learning to cook as an “older” woman, inventing a formula that was a shark repellent (wonder if that is where Batman got his Bat-Shark Repellent?) and just being herself, Child was and would become (in her words) Born Hungry: Julia Child Becomes the French Chef and would teach others that it was worth the time to learn how to do thing the “right way” when it came to cooking the perfect dish or […]

My Life in France by Julia Child

August 25, 2020 by narfna 7 Comments

This was such a lovely reading experience, for lots of reasons. I felt refreshed while reading it, and afterwards. I’ve since made a little hobby of revisiting old episodes of The French Chef on YouTube because they are calming and delightful (and I can make a French omelet now!). I spent a lot of time in my childhood watching PBS because my dad was cheap and wouldn’t pay for cable, so that meant lots of Julia Child. I remember not caring so much about the […]

Bon Appetit!

Bon Appetit! The Delicious Life of Julia Child by Jessie Hartland

August 12, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Bon Appetit! The Delicious Life of Julia Child by Jessie Hartland was a book I noticed in our sale section. I was looking for books to donate to my local library as an “In Memory” gift for a coworker from our sister store. She liked children’s books and had done a few reviews for cookbooks as well, therefore, I thought this was a perfect combination. I had known two things about Julia Child’s before this book: One she loved to cook (more butter the better) and she […]

The Book That Devoured September Like Julie Devoured Sole Meunière

October 3, 2017 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I started this audio book, 20 CDs clocking in at a whopping 26 hours, on September 8th! It is a bit of a bloated mess at times, trust me I could have trimmed some fat, but overall it is a well researched biography of a woman (who died just short of her 92nd birthday) who achieved great things and meant a lot of millions of people. Julia Child was born in Pasadena, CA with a silver spoon in her mouth. She had a mostly idyllic […]

Bon Appétit

January 24, 2016 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

More like 3.5, but since that isn’t an option, let’s go with three. This is a lovely little book; I just had a challenging time really getting into it. It has everything I love: food, France, humor, even liberal political leanings, Surprisingly though, I had to force myself to finish it, but I am definitely happy that I did. I believe this book served as the basis for the “Julia” part of the film “Julie and Julia,” where a blogger takes on the recipes of […]

Book Exchange Goodies from ardaigle!!!

December 21, 2015 by Jelinas 4 Comments

Good God, how embarrassing. This is my first post this year, and I only posted once last year. I am bound and determined to do better next year. In any case, I am over the moon about participating in this year’s exchange (at least THAT tradition is going strong!!)!! I’ve been DYING to read The Handmaid’s Tale, and I was lucky enough to get paired with Atwood expert ardaigle in this year’s exchange!! She ALSO got me Julia Child’s classic, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, […]
