Journey to the Center of the Earth

Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

March 8, 2025 by jmsudar 1 Comment

Hoowee was this one a stinker. I think this may be the worst of the 19th century lit I’ve been working my way through yet. You generally have to put up with a lot of bunk science and some pretty terrible social behavior, which in the former is just the state of the world at that time and in the latter is gross as hell at any time. While I wouldn’t necessarily say JttCotE (don’t wanna type it out every time sorry not sorry) is […]

Around the World in 80 Days

Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne

December 21, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Oftentimes when I read a book of its time I try my best to look past the weirdness that’s built into its age and meet it where it is. Honestly, Around the World in 80 Days isn’t really worth doing that. I’m conflicted about this: this is a very influential work, obviously, but it’s also one where the culture has moved effectively past its influence and the impact is dulled. This means that there’s less payoff than there should be for the racism, sexism, and general […]

The Mysterious Island

The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne

October 27, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

This will be a very short one because I’m feeling very lazy. The Mysterious Island is also a movie, with fantastic stop-motion animation by Ray Harryhausen. It’s one of my favorite movies and has been since I was a child. Harryhausen uses incredible techniques, such as manipulating an actual crab shell (purchased at Harrod’s in London) into a gigantic monster crab that the protagonists fight. They also fight a giant cassowary-like bird, giant bees, and late in the movie a horrifying sea monster. The use of […]

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne

September 28, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is another classic that I enjoyed much more than I expected to. The style was relatively dry and slow, but the story is compelling enough to keep it going. Captain Nemo in particular is a much more interesting character than I perceived from general pop culture knowledge. He is the last prince of an island nation that was destroyed by “a colonial power” (COUGH BRITAIN COUGH). A mechanical genius, he created The Nautilus, an electric submarine, and proceeds to wage […]

Darling it’s better down where it’s wetter.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne

February 14, 2021 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

I listened to this book via the podcast Phoebe Reads a Mystery which is voiced by Phoebe Judge of the famed Criminal Podcast. She reads one to two chapters a day of a classic mystery (though I’m not sure if this most recent selection qualifies). This book follows a reluctant passenger aboard the Nautilus, a submarine which must have seemed truly fantastical the time of the book’s 1869 publication, and it’s secretive Captain Nemo. French oceanographer Pierre Aronnax has, along with his faithful servant […]

Phileas Fogg is the most interesting man in the world

Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne

July 12, 2019 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr11bingo Travel This classic 1873 novel by Jules Verne was an utter delight! I am somewhat ashamed to admit that this is the first Jules Verne novel I’ve read and that I really knew nothing at all about it when I picked it up. Turns out, that worked to my advantage, as I was on the edge of my seat, eagerly turning each page to see whether Phileas Fogg would win his wager to travel around the world in 80 days. This book is part […]
