Something of a departure

My Darling Daughter by JP Delaney

December 29, 2022 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

This author also wrote The Girl Before, but has since refined his preoccupations and writing to the point where I’d stop describing his work as psychological thrillers altogether. This is Sky’s story, and though she is something of an unreliable narrator, this never comes as the sort of cheap shock or “writing myself out of a corner” gimmick its been elsewhere.  Neither does the fact that Susie, her biological mother, has a more complicated past than we’re led to believe initially.  Removed by the courts […]

Nice Blend of Science Fiction and Suspense

The Perfect Wife by JP Delaney

May 31, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley for free. This did not affect my rating or review. This book will be released on August 6, 2019.  So, I was pretty vocal about how badly I disliked “The Girl Before.” So you are probably wondering what in the world caused me to willingly pick out “The Perfect Wife” to review. Well, I heard that it had a lot of science fiction elements in it and since I want to read more science fiction this […]

Breasting Boobily

Believe Me by JP Delaney

March 7, 2019 by Zirza 9 Comments

There’s a blurb on the back of Believe Me from a review by The Daily Mail: ‘Slick, sexy, suspenseful and smart.’ It’s the Daily Mail so this should be taken with a grain of salt either way, but I can think of a few better s-words to describe this novel. Soporific. Sophomoric. Sexist. Shitty. And let’s not forget the main one: stupid. So very stupid. That isn’t to say there’s nothing to enjoy there, but it’s enjoyable the way a really bad film is: it […]

Living in my worst nightmare

November 8, 2018 by TheShitWizard 2 Comments

Pressed upon me by a friend who exclusively reads thrillers, despite being fairly run of the mill for quality in this genre, The Girl Before had an interesting central premise and was a very easy read – so easy I devoured it in one sitting. Emma is still reeling from a traumatic break-in, while Jane has suffered a devastating loss. Both women are struggling to find their equilibrium as well as somewhere affordable to live that’s not a security nightmare, and One Folgate Street is […]
