Well, that was upsetting. I can’t remember the last Oates book I read, but this was a wonderful (and horrifying) way to jump back in. I really don’t want to meet anyone like Q__ P__, ever. We join him mid-narrative, following him just under a year after he is given probation by a judge for pleading guilty to “sexual misdemeanor committed against a minor,” (Q__ P__: “What happened with the black boy was Q__ P__’ s first offense, & a suspended sentence followed no actual […]
It’s Bad When You Don’t Think A Crazy Guy is Crazy Enough, Right?
Regarding the question in my title, that could be on me…I like to read dark stuff. I’m used to it and I like it. This? Not so much. The premise of Jack of Spades is very similar to Stephen King’s Dark Half except without any (possible) supernatural elements. The fact that Stephen King gets referenced throughout this book made it all the more strange to me but in a good way. Where Dark Half is brutal and scary (or maybe it’s not now that I think […]
These Pink Ladies Don’t Need Any T Birds
What if girls weren’t made of sugar and spice? Or, maybe sugar and cayenne pepper? Through happenstance at my library’s last book sale, I found this book and then in another bin, I found a nonfiction book focusing on the hidden culture of female aggression. I got behind on my […]

I’m not the hugest Joyce Carol Oates fan – I’m sure I’ve read a book or two of hers, but I couldn’t tell you which ones. Clearly they didn’t make much of an impression on me. I picked this up on a Kindle deal around Halloween (scary good deals!). I think it was $1.99, and I’m still not sure it was worth the price. Oates was inspired by Jeffrey Dahmer, who I think even other serial killers thought was gross. In this story, Quentin P. […]
