Do the Dino

The Dino Door by Josh Funk and Renée Kurilla

October 29, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The online read The Dino Door  by a favorite author of mine, Josh Funk, was enjoyable, but did not  WOW me. I do like the very end with the silly image that gives a fourth wall break, in one of the pictures on the bedroom wall of the child, so that boosts the overall simplicity, but getting there was not my thing.  And when I say simple I mean simple as there are maybe a dozen or so words on the pages total. Writing a […]

Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast V07 Whodonut?: A Holiday Mystery by Josh Funk and Brendan Kearney

April 1, 2025 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

Josh Funk and Brendan Kearney had me at Miss Maple and lost me at gummy bugs! Okay, well, they didn’t lose me, just made me pause. But then they had me again at Elvis Parsley.  This seventh addition to the Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast series, Whodonut?: A Holiday Mystery is a fun, cute and different holiday story. While the “Who Dun-it” aspect and the idea of the last book in a series is not new, the way Funk and Kearney presents things is […]

Spicy Spicy Hot! by Lenny Wen

March 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Who doesn’t love food? I mean most people at least like it or have at least one thing they like. And if you know me, I like books as well as food. So when I can combine the two likes it is always fun.  I will start with Gingerbread Dreidels by Jane Breskin Zalben with illustrations by Thai Phuong. Due late August 2024 (read via an online reader copy), this picture book shows how we can have a lot of celebrations in our lives, and […]

The value of a good cupcake, art and great friends

Dear Unicorn by Josh Funk

January 13, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport Books recommended by friends  (I was recommend by the author and I have exchanged more than just tweets with him)   The cute companion to Dear Dragon by Josh Funk has arrived! (Or will in September 2023). We will now enjoy pen palling with a young girl and her unicorn pen pal in Dear Unicorn. This is a fun story about a young girl and her pen pal, who do not realize that they might have a lot in common (they like art, sports, […]

Dear Dragon: A Pen Pal Tale by Josh Funk

January 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Dear Dragon: A Pen Pal Tale is a book that is on sale. And if you wish to read, this book by Josh Funk, I say don’t be a punk and go forth and do so! You will be happy and look like a pro. Okay, that is the last rhyme I will do (or at least for a time). This picture book came onto my radar when I learned that Josh Funk was having the book Dear Unicorn (illustrated by Charles Santoso) published in […]

Refrigerators have stories too

Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast V05 The Great Caper Caper by Josh Funk

May 4, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There is a fifth book in the Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast series. This treat is called The Great Caper Caper. Yes, you read that right, there is a not so pleasant caper in our midst, and they are going to get our Lady and Sir into a sticky situation. Josh Funk adds the humorous text; Brendan Kearney adds the humorous illustrations to the mystery you will read. When the light in the fridge is missing, everyone fears they will be in near darkness […]
