The lost art of love letters

April 23, 2015 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

The Last Letter from your Lover is not typically a book I would pick up; at first glance it seemed a bit too “romance” versus just “chick lit” but badkittyuno borrowed it from our mother, who borrowed it from a friend so it was harmless to give it a try. Considering I ignored my husband throughout Jon Stewart and Jimmy Fallon for the last two night I think I liked it. Written in three parts, Last Letter tells the story of Jennifer Stiriling and Anthony […]

Surprisingly well-written romance

March 30, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

My mom borrowed this novel from a friend of hers, and when I saw the author’s name, I snagged it for myself. I’ve never read anything by Jojo Mayes, but I remember the reviews of her book Me Before You being really good, so I thought I’d try out this one. I really enjoyed The Last Letter from Your Lover, despite the fact that it was wedged a little bit more into the romance genre than I typically read, and I’m going to have to get a copy […]

A resounding meh

December 30, 2014 by competitivenonfiction Leave a Comment

I enjoyed Me Before You, even with it’s faults, and wanted something light after The Art of Baking Blind and the Book of Fate, so I decided to pick up Jojo Moyes’s latest, One Plus One. I wound up liking this less than Me Before You, but for entirely different reasons. The plot was similar in that it was about a woman who was somewhat down on her luck being saved by a rich man who was down on his luck in other ways. However, I found that this […]

I wasn’t a blubbering mess at the end of this one, but it was still pretty good.

Earlier this year, I was one of many who fell under the spell of Jojo Moyes’ Me Before You. I cried my eyes out at tragic, yet somehow still uplifting, love story. And I loved Moyes’ familiar, comforting writing style. Conversational and realistic. I was a big fan. One Plus One is Jojo’s new book. And while the book doesn’t have the same emotional punch as Me Before You, I still recommend it. I mean, come on. We can’t cry about everything. Jess is a […]

“You only get one life. It’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.”

July 29, 2014 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I put Me Before You on my to-read list after reading ModernLove’s review back in February. The emotional response she had to the book elevated it from a maybe read to a definitely read (the book was already on my radar given Jen K’s, Malin’s, and HelloKatieO’s reviews from CBR5). Here is what I wrote on Goodreads immediately following completing the novel: “This fucking book. Christ, I can’t even find the words right now. It’s poignant, and heart-rending, and should come with tissues.” I usually […]

A thoughtful love story

May 18, 2014 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I’ve seen so many favorable reviews for Me Before You (2013) by Jojo Moyes that I was compelled to pick it up. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but it was worth reading: a thoughtful, sweet, and sad story about two people coming together and improving each others’ lives. Louisa Clark is stuck in a rut. She’s in her mid-twenties, lives with her parents, and has worked in a cafe for the past six years. Her boyfriend is obsessed with exercise and has […]
