A German shepherd dog curled around the book, "When the Moon Hits Your Eye" by John Scalzi.

A swing and a miss from Scalzi

When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi

Bingo: Black I’ve been a longtime Scalzi fan since a friend insisted I read Old Man’s War.  However, his last trilogy, The Collapsing Empire, didn’t do it for me.  Then along came The Kaiju Preservation Society, 5 star read, followed by Starter Villain, 5 star read.  Scalzi was on a roll!  After seeing him at an event for Starter Villain, I was so geeked for the final book in this triptych, When the Moon Hits Your Eye.  Scalzi explained this at the event and here is a concise description […]

But what kind of cheese?

When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi

June 11, 2025 by stegolily 1 Comment

When The Moon Hits Your Eye is the latest in a string of very strange books by John Scalzi. The Kaiju Preservation Society introduced us to a former Postmates-ish driver taking a job at a wildlife preserve for horrifying monsters. Starter Villain pondered the moral implications of inheriting your uncle’s supervillain business. When the Moon Hits Your Eye introduces another premise so ridiculous that I can only assume Scalzi wrote the book on a dare: “What if the moon suddenly turned into cheese?” The story unfolds through a […]

Possible Death By Lunar Cheese Volcano

When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi

May 7, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

When the Moon Hits Your Eye is not really a straightforward story. The premise is basically “What if the moon actually turned to cheese, suddenly and unexplicably? How would people react?” Each chapter is a mini-episode of a couple of people trying to figure out what is going on, and what they think and how they feel about it.  These episodes range from a group of retirees in a diner, to a couple of young adults working at rival cheese shops, to NASA scientists, to […]

Feeling a bit lactose intolerant after this one

When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi

April 20, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

When Emmalita mentioned that she had a hard time getting into this novel because of the ever changing  points of view, I was hoping it might work better for me. After all, I love World War Z, and I don’t think that one has any repeat narrators – unlike Robocalypse, which structurally looked like it would follow a similar approach but then ended up having reoccurring characters. Unfortunately, she was right. Something about this one didn’t work as well for me as it did in […]

*Sigh*

When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi

March 22, 2025 by Emmalita 1 Comment

In John Scalzi’s When the Moon Hits Your Eye, the moon has turned to cheese, what now? So, When the Moon Hits Your Eye did not work for me for a couple of reasons. First, the structure of the story, looking at an event from a variety of perspectives as they experience it, is one that is hard for me to stay engaged with. Second, I had a hard time reading this story in this particular moment. I found reading about governments responding competently and listening […]

Mindblowing, but not in a good way

The Dispatcher by John Scalzi

December 30, 2024 by Caesar's Wife 3 Comments

This is my fifth Scalzi novel, so at this point, I must be a fan! I will admit, I was nearing the end of the year and still too far away from hitting my Half Cannonball so, on a quiet afternoon, I found myself googling “Short Free Audiobooks” in desperation. I stumbled upon the Dispatcher, saw the author’s name and the runtime (2 hours and 18 minutes), downloaded this audiobook (audionovella?) without hesitation. Tony Valdez is the titular Dispatcher, a person who is paid to […]
