Clunky and Unrealistic

Phantom Prey by John Sandford

March 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Ehhh. I didn’t really like this one. It’s a strong 3 star book, but the whole thing with the character of Fairy just didn’t work for me. It actually took away from the first plot (who murdered Alyssa Austin’s daughter and why). And though Sandford delays showing us what is going on until the 60 percent or so mark, I found myself losing interest after the reveal and just wanting to finish the book already. Usually Lucas has two cases to follow and in this […]

Antique Roadshow, But Deadly

Invisible Prey by John Sandford

March 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Wow. So this was really really good. I loved the idea of the two investigations that end up becoming entwined due to Lucas’s involvement with both. I also died laughing when Weather pretty much called Lucas an idiot for not realizing how much antiques cost. And I loved the idea of the antique circles turning deadly. I personally still have a velvet bench that belonged to my grandmother (my father’s mother) and it’s old and very 1930s. I have no idea how much the thing […]

Wonderful Installment in Prey Series

Broken Prey by John Sandford

March 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Wow. This book rocked it from beginning to end. Great character development for some of the characters I have been reading about for 16 books. I also really loved the idea of Lucas being home alone while dealing with Weather, the kids, and the housekeeper being in London for the summer. It definitely shows us a changed Lucas. I was worried here and there we would see some terrible backsliding with regards to Lucas being happily married, but Sandford doesn’t go there. I was also […]

Lucas and Russian Spies

Hidden Prey by John Sandford

February 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Yeah this book actually deals with Russian spies. Who knew how timely a read this would be for a book that was published back in 2004. The whole Russia thing was a non-starter for me. It just doesn’t work and it feels like Lucas is going through the motions. He has a new female Russia spymaster (or whatever she is) along for the ride as Lucas investigates why a man was murdered with ties to Russia. The only interesting to me in this one was […]

Great Continuation of Davenport

Naked Prey by John Sandford

January 25, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well we have Lucas fairly happy and settled in this one with a new wife and baby. However, Lucas is feeling restless since he doesn’t have anything big to work on. Apparently thinking it up causes something ugly this way to come and Lucas is quickly sent off to figure out if a black man and white woman being hung together is a lynching or something else. I think Sandford did well in this one with giving you a clue to who is linked to […]

I Came to Praise Carla Rinker

Mortal Prey by John Sandford

January 24, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Sigh. Wow. Sandford holds nothing back in this 13th book in the Lucas Davenport series. He brings back Clara Rinker and we are on for a wild ride. I really had no issues with anything except the ending, I wanted a different one, which probably says more about me than anything else. In “Mortal Prey” we have Lucas and Weather planning their wedding and expecting their first child together. Lucas is going crazy with plans for their new house coming together and also with him […]
