In the spring, in the suburbs of New Orleans–Metairie, Jefferson, Lafayette–hang wreaths on their front doors.

Lost Souls – 4/5 Stars I dunno if you’re into Southern, druggy, Queer, crusty, Goth vampire novels from the early 1990s, but is definitely one. Maybe you thought Lost Boys was too clean, so this one would be for you. We begin with a small bartender in New Orleans serving a drink to a teenage girl when three vampires (and vampires is a fluid term in this book with some specific definitions herein) roll in. The lead vampire–beautifully, alluring, dangerous–has sex with and impregnates the […]

He was of medium height, somewhat chubby, and good looking, with curly red hair and an innocent, gay face, more remarkable for a humorous air about the eyes and large mouth more than for any strength of chin or nobility of nose.

The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk

The King of Torts by John Grisham

The Caine Mutiny – 5/5 Stars A truly wonderful, carefully plotted and thoughtful war and anti-war novel from Herman Wouk, for which he won the Pulitzer in 1952 or so. The novel takes place mainly aboard the “USS Caine,” a minesweeper destroyer that is mostly stationed in Pearl Harbor and other naval bases, and who’s job is to tow artillery targets, clear shipping lanes, and minesweep. In a pinch, it could be used to fight submarines, but that is not the fate here of this […]

The Law School Scam, with a side of beaches

The Rooster Bar by John Grisham

July 6, 2020 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

John Grisham’s 25th legal thriller centers on three law students, Todd, Mark and Lola, who are about to enter their final semester. Unfortunately, their law school, Foggy Bottom, is a bottom tier school charging top tier prices, and once they graduate into a saturated market their degrees may be nearly worthless while their debt will be astronomical.  When a shared personal tragedy causes them to rethink their life choices, they abandon their plan to graduate for one of assumed identities and ‘unauthorized legal practice’ in […]

Review #1: Nothing to Lose.  This is book two in the Ziba MacKenzie series. Ziba’s a profiler helping out the cops in London.  She’s called to the scene of a murder of a woman.  There was apparently another woman killed there just over a week prior, and they both somehow look like Ziba. She’s not one to freak out, but she’s a little unnerved. She’s also secretly investigating her husband’s murder, and someone or multiple someones are starting to catch on.  Ziba found a flash […]

The Firm by John Grisham

June 8, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

This book did not age well. The Firm was published in 1991. It is a fast-paced legal thriller that was made into a 1993 movie starring Tom Cruise. If John Grisham was not writing the entire book based on the mental picture of Tom Cruise playing the main character, Mitchell McDeere, I will eat my shoe. The entire book is written as distinct scenes for some men to jaw at each other in manly ways and then a quick cut to another scene. Mitchell […]

The Last Juror by John Grisham

May 16, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

The Last Juror is a 2004 novel by John Grisham. It takes place throughout the 1970s in Ford County, Mississippi and begins as the narrator, a young roustabout booted from Syracuse J-school moves to Clanton, Mississippi (by way of Memphis) and buys the local newspaper out from a retiring publisher, whose progressivism begins and ends with extending the obituary section to the Black residents of the town. Young and brash and not really knowing what he’s doing, the narrator gets his break when a local […]
