“Now did you think it all through? All these things will catch up to you…” (Double bingo)

Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou

Nowhere Book Bingo: From a genre you’ve never read (true crime) CBR16 Bingo: Fiasco (Theranos was a massive fraud and a fiasco) I’ve owned this book since 2020 and am pretty sure I picked it up in an e-book sale because of the many Cannonball reviews I’ve read about it over the years. Not being particularly interested in the tech world or medical science, and certainly, not someone who reads a lot of business news, I didn’t really hear about this case as it was […]

Bad Blood: Secrets and lies in a Silicon Valley startup by John Carreyrou

I wasn’t aware of Theranos, the blood testing startup which imploded spectacularly in 2018 from one of the USA’s most-hyped new tech companies to bankruptcy and federal investigation, until Elizabeth Holmes, architect of the whole thing, was actually charged with fraud. The Pajiba commentariat pointed me in the direction of 2018’s Bad Blood (since I’m not a fan of podcasts), and it was well worth the read. Carreyrou, an investigative reporter with the Wall Street Journal, first got interested in the story long after Holmes […]

CBR12 BINGO: Money Be a near-genius-level Stanford dropout with a revolutionary idea. (Say, performing dozens of different types of blood tests on a drop of blood on a machine that can fit into people’s homes.) Impress the hell out of potential investors with your charisma, intelligence, and salesmanship. Recruit your staff from the best tech firms Silicon Valley has to offer. Give your company a snappy, tech-sounding name. Pack your board with illustrious individuals, including former Secretary of State George Shultz, former Secretary of State […]

Bad Blood by John Carreyrou

That Elizabeth Holmes was able to dupe such noted luminaries as Joe Biden, the Clintons, Rupert Murdoch, James Mattis, George Shultz, and Henry Kissinger should cure you and anyone else who suffers from imposter syndrome. Bad Blood is one of those books I’ve seen lauded in every corner of literatti space. For months, stacks of them were available at local stores. I probably wouldn’t have had interest in the story otherwise but since it’s been everywhere, I decided finally to pull it from my local library. […]

The way Theranos is operating is like trying to build a bus while you’re driving the bus.

Bad Blood by John Carreyrou

I was surprised by how much Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup (2018) by John Carreyrou drew me in. I watched the HBO documentary, The Inventor, with my man friend a while ago. I’d never heard of Theranos or Elizabeth Holmes, but it was an unbelievable story. When I first heard about the book, I wasn’t sure it would be worth reading after seeing the documentary. But I kept seeing Bad Blood all over the place. It’s on a number of “best of” lists and my […]

Band-Aids Don’t Fix Bullet Holes, and Delusions Don’t Fix Dysfunctional Startups

Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou

January 12, 2020 by KStar 3 Comments

How does Bad Blood, John Carreyrou’s #1 NYT nonfiction bestseller about Elizabeth Holmes, compare to the music video of “Bad Blood,” Taylor Swift’s #1 Billboard single about her beef with Katy Perry? Metric 1: Quality of Prose John Carreyrou is a functional and effective writer. Though lacks he flourishes or lyricism that would make the prose memorable, he is writing a nonfiction account, and he can effectively convey information as a journalist. Taylor Swift rhymes ‘bad blood’ with both ‘mad love’ and ‘deep cut,’ which […]
