The first book in an intimidatingly long series about nerdy, silly, time-travel historians, with a surprising amount of angst and drama.

Just One Damned Thing After Another (The Chronicles of St. Mary's, #1) by Jodi Taylor

“If this was one of those books, there would now be three pages of head-banging sex. The reality was that he pulled me close, whispered, ‘Mfhbnnntx,’ and I pulled his arm over me like a cover and muttered, ‘Trout,’ and that was pretty much it.” This was a lot better than I thought it would be! (I’ve seen quite a few negative or lukewarm reviews.) I had fun with it. This strange little book is one that only could have come from the bonkers ground […]

“You put dinosaurs and people together, you always get screaming.” (Bingo)

Just One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor

CBR14 Bingo: Time (the whole book is about time travel to different points in Earth’s history) Dr. Madeleine “Max” Maxwell is recruited by the seemingly rather mundane St. Mary’s Institute of History, only to discover that they are actually a secret organisation that time travels to various points in history, for research purposes. Obviously, you can’t just throw anyone into a time machine and have at it, so there’s a lot of training. Then there’s the fact that time travel is rather dangerous, and she […]

One Damned Thing After Another – Jodi Taylor (2013)

One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor

I decided to read this after kind of inadvertently listening to one of the short stories in the series via Audible. It was inadvertent in the sense that I didn’t realize it was part of a series. This is the first novel in the Chronicle’s of St Mary’s which is a kind of blend of Connie Willis’s Oxford Time Travel, Quantum Leap, Warehouse 13, and some romance genre blended in. Unlike Willis, Taylor is actually British, so the Britishness of this book is not forced […]

Lets do the timewarp again!

A Symphony of Echoes is the second main novel in Jodi Taylor’s Chronicles of St Mary’s. It starts with a visit to Victorian London to meet Jack the Ripper, and continues on with kidnapping from the future, bad therapy, and making sure Queen Elizabeth I doesn’t get executed by Mary. These  books are still proving to be a fun read, barrelling on at great pace and full of witty conversation and quirky scenarios. The story makes for an interesting “what if” scenario (what if Mary […]

Time Travel & T-Rexs

I’ve been struggling to get into Book 6 of The Expanse (sorry guys, but it’s just dragging for me…) and so was in a reading rut. Then I found this on my kindle having picked it up for 99p earlier this year and less than 6 hours later I’d finished the whole damned thing! So thank you Jodi Taylor for writing a fun, fast-paced, romp of a novel that had me turning pages like crazy (even during a boring conference call at work). The book […]

Episode 1-20: But Is It Really Your Story To Tell?

May 23, 2018 by prisco Leave a Comment

https://killingmykindle.com/2018/05/23/episode-1-20-but-is-it-really-your-story-to-tell/ Wherein I review: 72. And The Rest is History (St. Mary’s Chronicles #8) by Jodi Taylor 73. Final Girls by Riley Sager 74. Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff 75. An Argumentation of Historians (St. Mary’s Chronicles #9) by Jodi Taylor 76. You Should Have Left by Daniel Kehlmann I leave behind time travel and plunge into horror.  I ponder whether as white straight men, if we have the right to tell certain stories.  And while Final Girls didn’t leave me gasping, Lovecraft Country blew […]
