CBR11Bingo: And So It Begins (the first three books in the Harry Hole series)

The Bat (Harry Hole #1) by Jo Nesbø

Cockroaches (Harry Hole #2) by Jo Nesbø

The Redbreast (Harry Hole #3) by Jo Nesbø

I am loathe to start a series (like I did here — And So It Begins!) and not complete it. But I feel like I gave Harry Hole one hell of an effort, and after three very long books, I’m going to retire him early. These are not bad thrillers by any means. But there’s about 10 more in the series and the first three were each about 3 star books, so I’m calling it quits. But not before I review them! The Bat (Harry Hole […]

Maybe not his best, but not terrible either. Bingo #3

Midnight Sun by Jo Nesbo

Cbr11bingo TBR/Bingo #3 There’s nothing like a book sale to help me stock up on a ton of books that I would probably never have given a second glance to otherwise. Last spring, our local library’s book sale coincided with the going-out-of-business sale of the local Warehouse Books. This is how I ended up with Midnight Sun. I recognized Jo Nesbo’s name and figured this was a good opportunity to familiarize myself with his work. Midnight Sun does not feature Nesbo’s well known detective Harry […]

Human teeth can’t have done that to her neck.

The Thirst by Jo Nesbo

CBR11Bingo – Cannonballer Says (https://everyday-offershub.com/2018/02/jo-nesbo-does-it-again/) I thought I was done with Harry Hole with the last novel because it dived way too deep into misogynistic territories in ways that I didn’t feel like a lot of the previous novels did. I also kind of thought that Jo Nesbo was done writing them, in part because it felt like the previous novel had wrapped things up and had circled back around and was about policework as a whole, not just as a medium. But also because […]

The Son

The Son by Jo Nesbø

May 20, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Man, what a story. Jo Nesbø is a Norwegian author who has written 12+ books about a detective named Harry Hole. My library has like, half of them available on audiobook and while I’ve heard they’re very good, I hate starting a series if I can’t access all the titles! But this novel, The Son, is a stand-alone so I gave it a shot. It was excellent, and now I’m certain I’ll have to start the Harry Hole series. “Suddenly he realised why so many of […]

People weren’t sane anymore, which didn’t mean they were wrong. Some sort of cord between action and consequence had been severed.

Crudo – 4/5 Stars This book has a central conceit that I think is less good and less necessary to the novel as a whole than the quality of the writing. This is a novel that unfolds across about two weeks in summer of 2017 as the narrator, who is fashioning herself as the writer Kathy Acker dealing with the lead up to her wedding. So it’s hard to capture the writing of this novel, but it feels a little like auto-writing and spends a […]

Is this a dagger I see before me?

Another great Jo Nesbo book. This is not part of the Harry Hole series (which I absolutely love), this is more of a stand alone book. I enjoyed this book for a few reasons. Firstly, Macbeth is my all time favourite Shakespeare text. So I am always happy to read modern adaptations. Jo has done a remarkable job of making this a modern story. He has kept all of the main story lines, but adapted it to a police setting. The story begins with […]
