The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith

July 9, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

cn. transphobia Let’s get a few things out of the way real quick: JK Rowling is a TERF. And trans women are women. I checked this one out of the library before Rowling went on her recent bigotry spree on Twitter. She’s always held problematic views regarding transfolk but in recent weeks, she’s decided to just let her phobic flag fly. She also, perhaps not coincidentally, signed the infamous Harpers letter with other popular writers and academics that tut tutted “cancel culture”, the perpetual fear of […]

Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling

This is about the tenth time I’ve read this, but only the first time since I read it last year. After reading The History of Magic and Tales of Beedle the Bard, I was interested mildly in revisiting it, but then Hoopla put it on a list of books you could borrow with affecting your monthly count I went for it. Rather than review it I will simply make some stray remarks. They might end up being the same ones I made last year, but […]

Tales of the Beedle the Bard by JK Rowling

April 4, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Two books produced by Pottermore and maybe these have been recently produced as audiobooks. I bought The History of Magic for cheap on Audible shortly after reading Quidditch through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them in the fall. Beedle the Bard is a new audiobook and free on Audible currently.   The Tales of Beedle the Bard We all know the one story quite well, The Tale of the Three Brothers from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and there’s no […]

At Queerditch Marsh, however, a game had been invented that would one day become the most popular in the wizarding world.

Quidditch Through the Ages by JK Rowling

So plenty of you have probably read this one. I listened to the audiobook during a trip to Target, and that’s about where I think this one belongs. It’s the history of Quidditch referenced many time throughout the various Harry Potter novels. It’s one of the ones that Ron loves to read. It’s also a weird book that suggests like a lot of the elements of the world of wizarding, that nothing exists in the series unless it’s expressly named and talked about in the […]

If you’re going to ban Harry Potter, at least come up with a better reason

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling

September 7, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 23 Banned Book The Harry Potter series has been challenged for many things including glorifying witchcraft, encouraging bad behavior like disobeying rules and lying, and for being un-Christian. This recent ban though is almost laughable, but it did make the international news (click for link): Reverend Dan Reehill, head St Edward Catholic School in Nashville, Tennessee, apparently decided that the spells presented in the series were real. He supposedly consulted the Vatican on this, and had the books removed from his school library so […]

Lethal White by Robert Galbraith

July 13, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

This book is for CBR Bingo Birthday square- I had to look up the birthdays of several authors before I figured out which review hit which square. Lethal White picks up hours after the events of Career of Evil– Robin Elacott is married and struggling through her own wedding reception as she comes to terms with her realization that she not only loves her job in Cormoran Strike’s private investigations firm, but that she may also have some feelings for Strike himself. She also discovers […]
