“The impossible we do immediately. The unimaginable takes a little while.”

Cold Days (Dresden Files #14) by Jim Butcher

April 2, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Busy I finished reading this over a month ago and am now clawing my way through a backlog of tardy reviews on this snowy Midwestern APRIL day. Snowy. APRIL. DAY. In what we are calling Spring I guess? Ruuuuude. But I digress. When I dig into the recesses of my mind about this book, not much is surfacing, which isn’t a great sign. This book was reminiscent of an SNL Stefon skit. Bear with me here. For the unfamiliar, Stefon is an […]

Fine, I’ll Say It

Peace Talks by Jim Butcher

March 8, 2022 by Debcapsfan 4 Comments

I got Peace Talks by Jim Butcher out of the library. I’m not sure they have Battle Ground, I guess I should check. I was…underwhelmed. I’m starting to think that Jim Butcher can’t write/doesn’t know what to do with his female characters. Everyone wants Harry, Harry wants everyone, except Justine, because she’s off limits.  He can’t even act like a normal dude about Butters’ consensual poly relationship.  And yes, I’m glad he and Karrin Murphy finally traded I love yous, but he couldn’t get it […]

“There are two kinds of people in the universe, Molly,” I said. “Star Trek fans and Star Wars fans. This is shocking.” She sniffed. “This is the post-nerd-closet world, Harry. It’s okay to like both.”

Ghost Story (Dresden Files #13) by Jim Butcher

In one word: Surprising All right people. I’m here again with more thoughts on Jim Butcher and The Dresden Files, with book 13. In case you haven’t read my reviews of the previous 12 novels, here are my general impressions: 1. This series is like the Suki Stackhouse Tru Blood books; you just replace a clairvoyant vampire-loving waitress with a wizard half-vampire-loving detective. Silly, sexy, warring, magical fun times abound. 2. I am 60% here for this series because James Marsters, aka, Spike from Buffy […]

“Faith is about what you do. It’s about aspiring to be better and nobler and kinder than you are. It’s about making sacrifices for the good of others– even when there’s not going to be anyone telling you what a hero you are.”

Changes by Jim Butcher

December 7, 2021 by cheerbrarian 3 Comments

As this is my 51st book of the year (and thus I am only one book away from my goal of 52) I’m glad to have some more of The Dresden Files as I make my way to the finish line. I just checked to be sure and I read my first of the series in February of 2021, so on average I’ve done one of these a month and it’s been a non-stop smirk-filled romp with the delightful James Marsters (aka Spike from Buffy) […]

“There is the world that should be and the world that is. We live in one and must create the other.”

Turn Coat (Dresden Files #11) by Jim Butcher

In one word: Satisfying Cannonball Read Bingo: Landscape Oh hello there. It’s me again. With Dresden again. I gotta say, writing up reviews for these books has become an interesting exercise. I can’t remember when I have read a series this long (like, ever), and am doing so basically back-to-back, so being here again fills me with a strange deja vu. Plus writing these reviews is a special challenge because I like to be spoiler-free in my observations so I don’t want to get to […]

“Caring about someone isn’t complicated. It isn’t easy. But it isn’t complicated, either. Kinda like lifting the engine block out of a car.”

Small Favor (Dresden Files #10) by Jim Butcher

September 25, 2021 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Action-packed Cannonball Read Bingo: Reader’s Choice (Replacing Fauna) Dresden is in it again. High stakes, low chance of survival, will he come out on top? At this point, book 10 of I don’t even know how many, it’s not a spoiler that um, yes, he will. But I will say this one really is firing on all cylinders. The whole gang is around in this one, gangster Marcone, the vile Denarians, and one of my favorites, the Archive, the 12-year-old girl who […]
