Didn’t like it then, now I do. It’s magic!

March 3, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

If you read my reviews regularly, you’ll probably know how much I love The Dresden Files, but that I initially didn’t like it very much, to the point where I gave up after reading book three way back in 2009. I just didn’t think the series was for me. That I thought that at the time is alternately hilarious and horrifying. I almost didn’t pick this series back up, and so I almost missed out on what has turned out to be more and more […]

Talking cats and airships and did I mention the TALKING CATS.

October 21, 2015 by narfna 6 Comments

I ended up being quite fond of this book, to the point where I stayed up an extra two hours past my bedtime to finish it. It’s a solid steampunk fantasy book–nothing revolutionary, just *fun*, and I can see great potential in future books of the series. Basically, The Aeronaut’s Windlass takes place in a world where humanity lives in outrageously tall structures called Spires, which were built thousands and thousands of years before, and whose origins are shrouded. The surface of the planet (Earth?) […]

“I’d made the vampire cry. Great. I felt like a real superhero. Harry Dresden, breaker of monsters’ hearts.” **

One of the things I like most about doing the Cannonball every year is getting recommendations from other ‘ballers for books I might never have heard of otherwise. Honestly, I can’t believe I had never heard of Jim Butcher or Harry Dresden before, and for that I am sorry. And I also can’t believe that its taken me this long to get around to the first of the series, Storm Front. I’m going to admit something to you about Storm Front. I had taken it […]

Honeymoon Trouble

December 29, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I came across My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon in Strand Books. It’s always nice to pick up an anthology as they tend to be easy reads. As a big fan of The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher, his story “Heorot”about a kidnapped newlywed woman from an beer festival was enough reason to buy. His story brings back Miss Gard, a mysterious supernatural who consults for the kingpin of Chicago. I always liked her, so was fun to see them momentarily join forces and learn a tiny […]

Parkour, bitch.

June 29, 2014 by narfna 4 Comments

This is the most fun I’ve had while reading a book all year. I’ve loved and been affected by other books more deeply, but in terms of how gleeful a book has made me feel, this one wins hands down. Within the first three pages I was already giggling like a maniac. I’m currently twelve (almost thirteen, if I finish Brutal Youth tonight as I anticipate doing) reviews behind for this year, and it is eating my soul. And it’s this book’s fault, because I […]

You guys, this book was a such thrill-ride

June 26, 2014 by Malin 5 Comments

I snooze, I lose. I was hoping to be the first one to publish a review of Skin Game, but Emmalita/Rochelle beat me to it. Standard spoiler warning! This is book 15 in the series. You don’t want to start here. If you’re not caught up with the series, you may want to skip this review, because while I’m going to try to not spoil this actual book, I can’t actually avoid spoilers for some of the previous ones. It took me a long time to get hooked on these […]
