She blinded me with science… stories in rhyme

Meet the Universe: I'm a Black Hole by Eve M. Vavagiakis

May 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I’m a Black Hole by Eve M. Vavagiakis and Jessica Lanan being the illustrator, is currently available, but I read via an online reader copy. And I think twice. This might sound like, since I can’t remember it, that I did not like it, and maybe the first time it didn’t “grab my attention,” but this time around I appreciated it more. And that is why I should allow myself to read again, but there are so many new books out there. Like I’m a […]

Jump on the Earth Train

Jumper: A Day in the Life of a Backyard Jumping Spider by Jessica Lanan

The Day the River Caught Fire: How the Cuyahoga River Exploded and Ignited the Earth Day Movement by Barry Wittenstein

November 17, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Science and history can be a fun subject for kids. However, it always seems that people hit on the same historical event or scientific areas. Therefore, I am interested when I find books that do not cover the “same old same old,” or find a fresh take on an old favorite. While both books are available, I read them via online reader copies. When I saw Jumper: A Day in the Life of a Backyard Jumping Spider, My first thought was, “Oh a spider.” My […]

When you write over 300 words for a book that does not have one

The Fisherman & the Whale by Jessica Lanan

January 7, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

How do you write a review for a wordless picture book? Especially a 250 word one? You could start by saying that the title is The Fisherman & the Whale and is by Jessica Lanan. They are also the illustrator. Or should say this book is by Lanan period. It was published in May of 2019. And it was a pretty wild ride. The wordlessness is usually the first thing that turns me off on a book. Yet, there are a handful of books that […]

There is a new Kid in Town

A Kid of Their Own by Megan Dowd Lambert

February 7, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A Kid of Their Own is the second book set on the farm by Megan Dowd Lambert. The puns are worse than before, the story, however, is a bit stronger. The ending says book three to come! This time Clyde and the farmyard animals get a new Mama Goat with her baby. Everyone is overjoyed about the new addition. Except for Clyde. Roberta, his goose friend, is now taking the kid under her wing and not Clyde. The results are obvious, Clyde is jealous and […]
