Unreadable Things

Unspeakable Things by Jess Lourey

August 16, 2025 by Unpainted Huffhines 1 Comment

Well, that’s a bit harsh … but I found Unspeakable Things by Jess Lourey difficult to follow and pretty boring. Full disclosure: I love thrillers and horror novels. The more real they are, the more terrifying I find them. So I was anticipating the experience of reading this book because it’s “inspired by a terrifying true story” according to the back of the book. And I am not super discriminating about the thrillers I read, either–I have torn through so many Freida McFadden books in […]

So I read through all of the “Getaway” collection the other day and thought some stories hit harder than others. Per usual, here’s my rating per story in the collection. “Uncharted Waters” by Sally Hepworth (3 stars)-Yeah this one shocked me too. Probably because I have pretty much loved most of Hepworth’s mystery novels set in Australia. This one is also set in Australia, but follows a married woman named Ella who is going on a cruise without her husband Mac. While on the cruise […]

Bleak House

Unspeakable Things by Jess Lourey

March 22, 2020 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

You know that crawling feeling you get at the back of your neck sometimes, when the tiny hairs hidden there start screaming at you that something is off? I got that in the opening pages of Unspeakable Things, as the main character Cassie innocently describes her dad massaging her older sister’s shoulders over a family game of monopoly. This scene was enough to tell me from the outset that something rotten dwells at the core of this family. *shudder*. Unspeakable Things tells a thoroughly unsettling […]

I’m not sure if I liked this book or not.

Unspeakable Things by Jess Lourey

This is a strange book.  It’s basically an adult thriller told through the eyes of a pre-teen girl.  At times it’s hard to remember that the main character and the voice of the story is only 12.  At other times it’s glaringly obvious. There are basically two stories here.  They both hold approximately equal weight throughout the book.  Unfortunately only one is truly resolved at the end. Cassie is a 12 year old girl in Minnesota who lives on a farm.  Her sister is about […]
