Lifeform

Lifeform by Jenny Slate

It’s tough to write about this book because I’m still grappling with how out there the voice is. My opinion about Jenny Slate remains sky high, but she is… very LA. Good! That’s her style and she absolutely dominates with it. This book is very poetic, which is not my jam but which I enjoyed through her performance. This book is unvarnished, exciting, and crazy, and I mean all of those things in a good way. At this point I’m out of things to say […]

Little Weirds by Jenny Slate

What a delightful, odd, heartfelt book. Many thanks to NTE for sending it my way. I put this one on my to read list following watching Jenny Slate’s Netflix special Stage Fright which is a mix of a stand up and documentary. When I finished Stage Fright I was much more interested in Slate than I had been before. Having now finished Little Weirds which she wrote at about the same time, I feel as though I have had an interesting, if not entirely understandable, […]

How Can You Come Up With A Better Title Than ‘Little Weirds’?

Little Weirds by Jenny Slate

“What if I got a crown for doing nothing but being who I am,” Jenny Slate is a comedic treasure, and Little Weirds proves to be a reflection of her being. Through poetic similes and magical weirdness, Slate’s personality shines through, and I’m here for it. I read critiques of the book that stated it is, ironically, “too weird,” as if Slate didn’t try to tell her reader from the outset. This is not your average memoir. Little Weirds is not a book that can […]

Little Weirds by Jenny Slate

I started Jenny Slate’s collection of essays on the morning of New Year’s Day on my way to meet my friend for one of those polarizing NYC boutique fitness classes. The nature of the book makes it easy to fly through vignettes and I was not having a great feeling about it as I got off the subway. I couldn’t believe I was going to start out the new year with a DNF. I was already trying to justify it in my head, “Perhaps 2020 […]
