The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

October 17, 2025 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

Bingo: “I” Seventeen year old Avery is on the ropes. Her mother has died, her father is nowhere around, and she’s living with her beloved sister until her sister’s abusive boyfriend moves in. Refusing to live with him, Avery moves into her car. What she doesn’t know is her life is about to change drastically. Jennifer Lynn Barnes’s The Inheritance Games is a YA novel. Her heroine Avery is visited by a member of the fabulously wealthy Hawthorne family, and told she must be present […]

I inadvertently overheard some things while my ear was casually pressed to this steel door.

“No,” Max corrected. “You and I are friends. Grayson is the physical manifestation of your avoidant attachment style. He won’t let himself want you. You don’t want to want to be wanted. Everybody stays at arm’s length. Nobody gets hurt, and nobody gets any.” ― Jennifer Lynn Barnes, The Hawthorne Legacy CBR17 Bingo: Play At the end of The Inheritance Games, one mystery was solved…sort of. Why the game was created was answered, but as to why Avery was named the heir remains unknown. The […]

If it were me, I’d be hiding in one of the mansion’s many libraries.

Well, my other suggestion involves preemptively whacking the entire Hawthorne family, and I was afraid you’d take that as a euphemism. ― Jennifer Lynn Barnes, The Inheritance Games CBR17 Bingo: Green Avery Grambs is no stranger to pain. Orphaned after her mother’s death, and abandoned by her father, Avery is left to raise herself. Other than her older, half-sister Libby, the only one looking out for Avery is Avery. When Libby’s abusive boyfriend moves into their apartment, Avery moves out. Sleeping in her car, working […]

“Some of us exist just a little too loudly for the comfort of those who would prefer we did not exist at all”

The Brothers Hawthorne by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

CBR 16 Bingo – Golden: Money, wealth, literal gold. This 4th instalment in what I assumed would stay a trilogy was unexpected, but I wasn’t disappointed by its existence. It focuses more on Grayson and Jameson than Avery, and it was nice to learn more about them. Grayson and Jameson have both gone away from home, but for different reasons. Grayson leaves to help protect his half-sisters, whereas Jameson goes to seek thrills and play a game. This book was pretty good, but probably my […]

“Everything’s a game. Avery Grambs. The only thing we get to decide in life is if we play to win.”

The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

CBR 16 Bingo – Dun dun: It’s the last book of the series, so there’s the suspense of the ending that has been building up through the past books. There was also anticipation before the book, and some of it came as a surprise. I was really excited before reading the final book of this series, and it did not disappoint. By this book, not only was Avery’s fortune on the line, but also her life. Yet, as it becomes clear, there is one last […]

“Your silence on the issue of people trying to kill you is deeply disturbing.”

The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

CBR 16 Bingo – Golden: A main theme in the series is economic status and money in general. Being a sequel, it’s hard to summarize or give a synopsis of this book without spoiling the first one, but it’s really just a continuation on the plot of the 1st book, with Avery trying to stay alive long enough to inherit the money, and solve the mystery as to why she was the heiress in the first place. This was a pretty solid sequel. Usually, the […]
