Ignore the Marketing on This One—This Is a Different Kind of Dragon-Novel

The Sky on Fire by Jenn Lyons

December 31, 2024 by LittlePlat 2 Comments

Jenn Lyons is back on the dragons again, it would seem. Is she also back with her complexity addiction? Let’s find out! Despite already having a fantasy series tied to dragons, this new book has no link back to that story whatsoever. This is its own new thing; a new kind of story with a new set of dragons. And just what kind of story is The Sky on Fire? Rather than a sprawling fantasy epic, this time we’re dealing with heist! We are also dealing […]

Call it Dragons Eleven

The Sky on Fire by Jenn Lyons

September 23, 2024 by dreadpiratekel 5 Comments

What do I often say I want in a book? I say I want a nice standalone fantasy novel. But when I read a standalone fantasy novel that I enjoy, I find myself thinking, “No wait! I want more time with these specific characters in this world.” I guess you have to be careful what you wish for because you might just get it. Now that I’ve finished The Sky on Fire by Jenn Lyons, I’m sitting here wanting more. For this review, I also […]

A Chorus of Dragons, Series Review

The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons

The Name of All Things by Jenn Lyons

The Memory of Souls by Jenn Lyons

The House of Always by Jenn Lyons

The Discord of Gods by Jenn Lyons

How epic do you like your fantasy? Do you need world-ending battles between gods and demons? Do you love dragons and wizards? Vampires and zombies and shapeshifters? Magic swords and magic stones? How about pirates and kraken? Maybe some political intrigue and betrayal?? Well, buddy, have I got the series for you! I seriously feel like Stefon when I talk about this series, because these books have everything. Also, it’s told in varying timelines, by various narrators, under the conceit that these chronicles have been […]

All right, I’ve finished this bonkers series now, so I know y’all are safe to read it. Five stars.

The Discord of Gods (A Chorus of Dragons, #5) by Jenn Lyons

I’m glad I kept going with this series. I was skeptical after book one, but the storytelling and worldbuilding here let me look past the confusion and ‘Wait, what now?’ moments to really enjoy myself, particularly in books three through five, when all the backstory telling is out of the way, and our main characters start to work together and uncover secrets. This last book is a non-stop rollercoaster ride of action. There are some nice character moments, and occasional moments of quiet, but for […]

Well, this is ambitious of me, but I’m going to try and review an entire five-book series all in one go. I was prompted to do this earlier this week when I saw there had been another update on The Winds of Winter that did not include a hint of a release date. We’ve gone through about ten years of this, and I understand that now some people are a bit shy when it comes to epic fantasy series. Well, not to worry: A […]

SEND IN THE KRAKEN!! aka The Queerest Fantasy Series I’ve Ever Read, Part IV

The House of Always (A Chorus of Dragons, #4) by Jenn Lyons

August 10, 2021 by narfna 4 Comments

This series remains one of the most confounding I’ve ever read. It makes me feel unstable thinking about it and reading it. I don’t quite know how to explain it to you. I start these books, every time (except maybe the first book, since I had nothing yet to forget) soooo frustrated that I get angry, and I almost quit because everything is so needlessly elaborate in terms of structure, plot, and characters, it’s basically impossible to feel prepared before reading them (without binging them […]
