Last book of the best dang series I’ve read this year

Warrior of the World by Jeffe Kennedy

April 19, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

I love this series. I *love* this series. When I sat down to write this review, I thought I have probably run out of things to say about this series. I reviewed book one and book two with an almost embarrassing amount of gush about the pacing of the story and character development. This is the final book in this series, though the whole story is set before the stories in the Twelve Kingdoms which I will be picking up after (and have vague recollections of?). All […]

Rare character development and expert storytelling

Exile of the Seas by Jeffe Kennedy

March 5, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

This series is shaping up to be one of the best character studies I’ve encountered in a very long time. I remember being excited about watching the Godfather because people said it was an amazing character study and I don’t understand people at all, so I love character study stories. So I watch the movie (and the second and the third), only to have the character make critical decisions off screen with no explanation. First, the guy hates his dad’s business, and suddenly he’s working […]

A hard book to read but an easy book to love

Prisoner of the Crown by Jeffe Kennedy

January 30, 2020 by Nart 3 Comments

I hated this book and loved it in equal measure, and I hated it for the same reason I loved it. If you’re looking for a book that will make you feel the most perfect, soul burning rage, but in a good way, this might be it. Holy goddamn. Trigger warning for literally every kind of abuse I can think of: emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, suicide ideation, substance abuse, and so so so much of all of it in the worst way. It […]

A fantasy romance with a librarian heroine

June 25, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars From Goodreads: Magic has broken free all over the Twelve Kingdoms. The population is beset by shapeshifters and portents, landscapes that migrate, uncanny allies who are not quite human…and enemies eager to take advantage of the chaos.  Dafne Maillouix is no adventurer – she’s a librarian. But the High Queen trusts Dafne’s ability with languages, her way of winnowing useful facts from a dusty scroll, and even more important, the subtlety and guile that three decades under the thumb of a tyrant taught […]
