The Eyre Up There

February 10, 2017 by The Chancellor 3 Comments

One of the good things about joining a book club at my local library is that I am exposed to books that I wouldn’t normally choose.  And since it’s run by the library, most of the selections are legit.  In this case, I was shocked to find we were reading a book I had never heard of.  The Eyre Affair, by Jasper Fforde was a very different read for me. Time travel, alternate history, and alternate literary endings are not usually all thrown into the […]

Strangeness with Magic, Dragons, and a Quarkbeast

December 27, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I read Jasper Fford’s Tuesday Next series, and I liked it for a while. I got bored after about book 4. So when I saw a YA fantasy novel by the same author, I wanted to try it out. The Last Dragonslayer was mostly what I expected, and also a little not. What defines Fford’s writing for me is a sense of slightly off-kilter in an otherwise normal story, and that is totally here. The normal is as follows: 15 year old indentured servant Jennifer […]

A delightful dystopia.

I’ve been sitting on a hardcover copy of this book for YEARS, waiting for the right time to read it. The long-promised two sequels seemed nowhere in sight, so I figured no harm in waiting. And now that it looks like the second book* is on it’s way for next year at the earliest, 2017 at the latest, I figured it was about time. I am also feeling resentful and wanting to take back the phrase “Shades of Grey” from certain . . . sectors. […]

I feel like this series is tired.

First Among Sequels is the fifth Thursday Next book, a book series which is impossibly to accurately sum up, because it’s so weird, and stubbornly resists classification (on purpose). I suppose in theory you could start reading the series with this book (after all, I had largely forgotten most of the details of the previous four when I started it and it turned out fine for me), but you’d really lose appreciation for the little details if you did that, and a lot of the […]

Ridiculously fun fairy-tale, murder-mystery spoofing nonsense.

October 3, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m not sure whether it’s the book, or whether I was just in the perfect mood for it, but regardless, the result is the same. The Fourth Bear is my favorite of the seven Jasper Fforde novels I’ve read. The first five Thursday Next Novels are fun but can be a bit overwhelming, and sometimes downright confusing, and the first Nursery Crime book, The Big Over Easy, does a little bit too much work setting up the Nursery Crime world to really enjoy its premise. But […]
