Two Stories, Rethought

Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld

Thor Vol 1: The Goddess of Thunder by Jason Aaron

January 27, 2020 by Manimama Leave a Comment

I’m a big Jane Austen fan and Pride and Prejudice is my favorite of her works. Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld is a modern-day retelling of this classic story that stays pretty faithful to the spirit of the original. Elizabeth Bennet is here re-imagined as a writer for a women’s magazine. She is 38 and living in New York City. She and her elder sister, Jane, unexpectedly return to Cincinnati after their father has a heart attack. They find their family and their childhood home […]

Oh, If I Had a Hammer

March 7, 2018 by Emmalita 3 Comments

You may have heard, Thor is a woman now. What happened? Nick Fury whispered in Thor’s ear and with a few words made him unworthy of Mjolnir. His ex, Jane Foster picked it up and took on the mantle of Thor. Thor got all upset, tried to fight her (not knowing it was Jane), but Mjolnir likes Jane better. At some point, Thor Odinson lost his arm and had it replaced with Uru. Now he and Bucky are twinsies. Maybe they could go on adventures […]

Those Rebel Scum Never Learn

November 30, 2017 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

The galaxy’s worst dad and most under rated badass is still trying to find his son, Luke Skywalker, and destroy the various upstarts the Emperor seeks to make his equals. For some reason, people don’t take him seriously enough. In Vader Down, Vader, with the help of Dr. Aphra and her murderbots, has tracked Luke to a remote planet. The rebel fighter pilots are flying training exercises right where Vader comes out of hyper space. The rebels, not knowing it’s Vader, think they can practice […]

More like Bore: Goddess of Thunder

September 21, 2017 by Halbs 1 Comment

This book includes three issues of the current Thor run, an issue of Thor Annual (a periodic collection of one-shot stories) and a What If? story from forty years ago (a story outside of the normal Marvel timeline). Unfortunately, despite the buffet of options, this collection features little thriller and a lot of filler. I’m disappointed that Marvel would put out a trade with only a few lackluster issues and then slap in some random Thor comics in the back. However, I did think that the […]

Thor: Goddess of Courage and Quips

September 6, 2017 by Halbs 2 Comments

I have no real knowledge of Thor other than the Marvel movies and some heavy metal songs that I kind of understand, so my background of Thor’s Marvel mythology is limited. Thor, that chiseled Norse god of the uncovered torso, can’t get it up. He can’t pick up Mjolnir, his hammer. It’s just sitting on a moon. He’s been trying for weeks to pick it up and it won’t budge. Thor won’t eat or sleep. Thor just wants to hammer, but he can’t. Finally, he […]

Introducing Your New Thor

July 5, 2017 by Emmalita 8 Comments

“There must always be a Thor.” Towards the end of Original Sin, white Nick Fury whispered a secret into Thor’s ear, which caused him to drop Mjolnir on the moon. Goddess of Thunder opens with the fallout of a Thor who no longer holds the power of Thor. I haven’t come across Roxxon Corporation as a direct antagonist much in the Marvel Comic Universe, so I’m not sure if Thor and Roxxon have a special relationship, or if this is something new for a new, Midgard-born […]
