Key Elements of a Hate to Love Romance Missing

The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory

August 16, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

So this pains me. I bought this today and ended up not really enjoying it. It was a fight to finish because in the end Maddie and Theo were not as intriguing as Alexa and Drew (The Wedding Date) and even Carlos and Nik (The Proposal). If you are going to do a hate to love romance you have to make me actually believe the two people don’t like each other. We are finally shown what happened when Maddie and Theo first met and yeah, […]

Do you take this romance to be your NotMyWheelHouse book?

The Wedding Party (The Wedding Date #3) by Jasmine Guillory

#cbr11bingo #NotMyWheelHouse The Wedding Party (The Wedding Date #3) is my #NotMyWheelhouse read. I do not do romances. Nothing wrong with them, I think they are lovely things to read. And if I was going to branch out into a romance novel, I believe Jasmine Guillory was a good reintroduction as I have read a Harlequin novel or two, a Jackie Collins and, of course, books with romances in them, but overall, not my cup of tea. But of course, I get their appeal completely! […]

Two Cute Stories

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory

May 12, 2019 by Manimama 5 Comments

I had read The Proposal last year when I got in in my Book of the Month Club. I enjoyed it, but it didn’t stick with me. I then read a Cannonballer’s review of The Wedding Date and thought I’d give it a try. The Wedding Date tells the story of Alexa, Chief of Staff to the Mayor of Berkeley, CA. She gets stuck in a hotel elevator when on her way to meet her sister and ends up spending time trapped with Drew. Drew is a […]

“Deciding to spend your life together shouldn’t be a surprise”

The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory

February 23, 2019 by faintingviolet 4 Comments

Almost exactly a year ago I read Jasmine Guillory’s debut The Wedding Date. It was charming, had great characters, a plot with meat on its bones, and sexy bassline. In my review of that book I wished for a follow up with supporting character Carlos, and Guillory must have had as much fun writing him as I did reading him because her second book is focused on Carlos. The Proposal* picks up six months after the end of The Wedding Date. We immediately meet the […]

“Alexa looked down into her coffee again, gazing into the dark brown liquid like it was Dumbledore’s Pensieve”

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

January 4, 2019 by esme 3 Comments

The Wedding Date, by Jasmine Guillory, is a delightful romcom that doesn’t shy away from some of the tough work involved in interracial relationships. Alexa calls Drew on his privilege many times in the book, and Drew demonstrates that he’s learning. These issues come up throughout the book, but not in a preachy way – in a way that shows a relationship growing and trust developing. Briefly, Alexa and Drew ‘meet cute’ in an elevator, which sets the stage for a fake relationship. Their chemistry […]

I liked this better than her first book.

The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It was pretty similar to her first one, so if you liked that one, you will probably like this one, too. I actually think I liked this one more. They both feature unlikely pairings of people who grow to know one another, the central conflict is emotional and internal rather than forced and coming from outside, and feature a fantastic amount of food. Seriously, all these characters do is go from one meal to the next. And you […]
